Assistant Physician
Assistant physician in the United States (not to be confused with a physician assistant) is a Medical Doctor ( MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine ( DO) who has graduated from a four-year medical school program and is licensed to practice in a limited capacity under the supervision of a physician who has completed his or her residency. The Assistant Physician license is currently issued in Missouri, Virginia, New Hampshire, Utah, and Arkansas. In 2019, the state of Missouri rejected a proposed legislation which would have allowed assistant physicians to collaborate with physician assistants and nurse practitioners and also provide a pathway to becoming a full physician without completing a residency program. A physician assistant or physician associate (PA) is a type of Mid-level practitioner, mid-level health care provider. In North America PAs may diagnose illnesses, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and may serve as a principal healthcare provider. PAs are required in many states to have a direct agreement with a physician. In the United States and Canada, PAs are certified by their respective certifying bodies. The educational model was initially based upon the accelerated training of physicians during the shortage of qualified medical providers during World War II. In the UK, PAs were introduced in 2003. Residency or postgraduate training is specifically a stage of graduate medical education. It refers to a qualified physician (one who holds the degree of MD, DO, MBBS, MBChB), veterinarian ( DVM or VMD) , dentist ( DDS or DMD) or podiatrist ( DPM) who practices medicine, veterinary medicine , dentistry, or podiatry, respectively, usually in a hospital or clinic, under the direct or indirect supervision of a senior medical clinician registered in that specialty such as an attending physician or consultant.
