Zubin Kanga
Zubin Kanga (born 1982) is an Australian-born pianist, composer, and musicologist based in London. He specialises in contemporary and experimental music. Early life and education Kanga was born in Sydney and attended Sydney Grammar School until 2000. He graduated from the University of Sydney in 2006 before moving to London in 2007, where he is still resident. Kanga studied under Rolf Hind and attended the Royal Academy of Music, receiving an MMus in 2009 and a PhD in 2014. Career Kanga has been an active chamber musician since joining Australian contemporary music group Ensemble Offspring in 2005 at the age of 22, of which he remains a member. He played with the Marsyas Trio between 2017 and 2018, during which time they recorded ''In the Theatre of Air'', an album of music by women composers for piano, flute, and cello. A pianist ( , ) is an individual musician who plays the piano. Conlon Nancarrow
Samuel Conlon Nancarrow (; October 27, 1912 – August 10, 1997) was an American- Mexican composer who lived and worked in Mexico for most of his life. Nancarrow is best remembered for his ''Studies for Player Piano'', being one of the first composers to use auto-playing musical instruments, realizing their potential to play far beyond human performance ability. He lived most of his life in relative isolation and did not become widely known until the 1980s. Biography Early years Nancarrow was born in Texarkana, Arkansas. Limelight Awards
The Limelight Awards were an annual celebration of the performances, recordings and music personalities in Australian classical music. Sponsored by the monthly classical arts magazine '' Limelight'', they were the only publicly voted awards of their kind in Australia. In 2012 the awards attracted more than 4,500 votes. The Limelight Award winners are voted on from a shortlist of entries selected by an expert panel of ''Limelight'' critics and ABC Classic FM staff over ten categories. These categories included Music Personality of the Year, Best Newcomer and Best Orchestral, Chamber and Solo performances. From this shortlist the public were then invited to select and vote for their favourite musicians. Julius Eastman
Julius Eastman (October 27, 1940 – May 28, 1990) was an American composer, pianist, vocalist, and performance artist whose work is associated with musical minimalism. He was among the first composers to combine minimalist processes with elements of pop music, and involve experimental methods of extending and modifying music in creating what he called "organic music". Alwynne Pritchard
Alwynne Pritchard (born 1968) is a British performer, composer, artist and curator based in Bergen, Norway. She has also developed choreography for performances of her own pieces. She is co-founder of the music-theatre company Neither Nor and former artistic director of the BIT20 ensemble. Pritchard was born in Glasgow. From 2008 and until March 2014, she was artistic director of the Borealis Festival in Bergen, and from 2001 until 2008, she taught composition at Trinity College of Music in London. Michael Finnissy
Michael Peter Finnissy (born 17 March 1946) is an English composer, pianist, and pedagogue. An immensely prolific composer, his music is "notable for its dramatic urgency and expressive immediacy". Although he rejects the label, he is often regarded as the foremost composer of the New Complexity movement. Brett Dean
Brett Dean (born 23 October 1961) is an Australian composer, violist and conductor. Biography Brett Dean was born, raised and educated in Brisbane. He started learning violin at the age of eight, and later studied viola with Elizabeth Morgan and John Curro at the Queensland Conservatorium, where he graduated in 1982 with the Conservatorium Medal for the highest achieving Student of the Year. In 1981 he was a prize winner in the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards. From 1985 to 1999, Dean was a violist in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Alexander Schubert
Alexander Schubert (born 13 July 1979) is a German composer. Much of his music is experimental, involving multimedia, improvisatory, and interactive elements. He draws upon free jazz, techno, and pop styles. Biography Alexander Schubert was born in Bremen. He studied Bioinformatics in Leipzig, then spent a year at the Center for Art and Media Technology in Karlsruhe at the Institute of Music and Acoustics. International Rostrum Of Composers
The International Rostrum of Composers (IRC) is an annual forum organized by the International Music Council that offers broadcasting representatives the opportunity to exchange and publicize pieces of contemporary classical music. It is funded by contributions from participating national radio networks. The first Rostrum took place in 1954 and involved delegates from the German, French, Belgian and Swiss national broadcasting companies. From then until 2002 the Rostrum's sessions were held at UNESCO's headquarters in Paris, with the exception of 2000 when they were hosted by Muziek Groep Nederland and the Gaudeamus Foundation in Amsterdam.
