Zirkel (Studentenverbindung)
A Zirkel (German for "circle", as in "circle of friends") is a monogram used in European student societies in countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Latvia, Estonia (Studentenverbindungen). __TOC__ Look and meaning A ''Zirkel'' consists of intertwined lines, followed by an exclamation mark if the society is still active. The lines mostly show the first letters of the name of the ''Studentenverbindung'' and / or the letters v,c,f or e,f,v. Monogram
A monogram is a motif made by overlapping or combining two or more letters or other graphemes to form one symbol. Monograms are often made by combining the initials of an individual or a company, used as recognizable symbols or logos. A series of uncombined initials is properly referred to as a cypher (e.g. a royal cypher) and is not a monogram. History Monograms first appeared on coins, as early as 350 BC. The Landsmannschaft Schottland ("Scotland") is a German Studentenverbindung, fraternity – not to be confused with the Fraternities and sororities in North America, American variety – situated in Tübingen, a university city in south-western Germany. It is a brotherhood of students and alumni of University of Tübingen, with membership being a lifelong commitment. ''Schottland'' was founded on 19 November 1849. The name comes from an early meeting place of members, a pub called the "Schottei". Since 1905, ''Schottland'' resides in its fraternity house, a multi-storey mansion in the style of a Scottish castle, on the top of a hill overlooking Tübingen. Jewish Museum Of Switzerland
The Jewish Museum of Switzerland in Basel provides an overview of the religious and everyday history of the Jews in Basel and Switzerland using objects of ritual, art and everyday culture from Middle Ages, the Middle Ages to the present.
