Zhonghua Street Night Market
The Zhonghua Street Night Market () is a night market in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. History The night market opened in the 1950s. In 1965, the Kaohsiung County Government officially set up the area to be a night market. Architecture The night market is located at the intersection of Zhongshan Street and Guangyuan Road on a 3 km (1.9 mi) long street with over more than 500 food stalls. Many delicacies such as fig jelly, salted crispy chicken, chicken rice, beef noodles and herb tea can be found in the night market. It also has cultural interests and temples. Transportation The night market is accessible by walking about 100m (350ft) north of exit 2 of the Fongshan Station of the Kaohsiung MRT. Fongshan District
Fongshan District, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency () is a district located in southern Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Fongshan is one of the administrative centers of Kaohsiung and is home to the Republic of China Military Academy. There are three military units currently located in Fongshan. Both the Republic of China Military Academy and R.O.C. Army Infantry School came to Taiwan from mainland China and were re-established here in 1950. Chung Cheng Armed Forces Preparatory School was established in 1976. These three units used to be the main economic driving force, but their importance diminished gradually as Fongshan has established itself as a conjunction between Pingtung City and Kaohsiung. Although there are several industrial zones at the outskirts of the city, the major lifestyle in Fongshan seems to be very residential. Night markets or night bazaars are street markets which operate at night and are generally dedicated to more leisurely strolling, shopping, and eating than more businesslike day markets. They are typically open-air markets popular in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Chinatowns in several other regions of the world. History The concept of the night market traces its roots back to the medieval Chinese Tang dynasty. The Tang government put strict sanctions on night markets and their operations in A.D. 836. Towards the end of the Tang Dynasty, economic expansion led to less state regulation and restrictions being lifted on night markets. Kaohsiung County was a county in southern Taiwan between 1945 and 2010. The county seat was located in Fongshan City. History Kaohsiung County was established on 6 December 1945 on the territory of Takao Prefecture () shortly after the end of World War II. In the early years, Kaohsiung County consists of most territory of Takao Prefecture except the territory near cities of Takao (Kaohsiung) and Heitō ( Pingtung). The county is divided into districts (), which come from reformed Japanese districts (). The districts are divided into townships. On 16 August 1950, another division reform was implemented. Kaohsiung Metro () is a rapid transit and light rail system covering the metropolitan area of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Its rapid transit network is known as Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit or Kaohsiung MRT. Construction of the MRT started in October 2001. The MRT opened in 2008 and the Circular light rail in 2015. Taiwanese night markets ( zh, t=夜市, p=yèshì) are street markets in Taiwan that operate in urban or suburban areas between sunset and sunrise. A few, such as Huaxi Street Tourist Night Market (or Snake Alley), utilize purpose-built marketplaces, but most occupy either sidewalks or even entire streets that carry vehicle and pedestrian traffic by day. Some night markets in smaller side streets and alleys feature retractable roofs. Most night markets operate daily and feature a mixture of individual stalls selling clothing, consumer goods, ''xiaochi'' (similar to snacks or fast food), and specialty drinks.
