Yucatán Symphony Orchestra
The Yucatán Symphony Orchestra (OSY) is a symphony orchestra based in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico, México. It was founded in 2004 and has maintained performances in the Mexican state of Yucatán ever since. Located in the Palacio de la Música and formerly in the José Peón Contreras theater, the orchestra performs 2-3 subscription concerts every month in addition to special community events in the Mérida area. Its previous guest conductors have included Maciej Żółtowski, Grigor Palikarov, and Michele Santorsola, and it has performed with soloists such as Jorge Federico Osorio, Carlos Prieto (cellist), Carlos Prieto, Alexei Volodin, Stephanie Chase, and Leticia Moreno. Its current music director is José Areán. Mérida, Yucatán
Mérida () is the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán, and the largest city in southeastern Mexico. The city is also the seat of the eponymous Municipality. It is located in the northwest corner of the Yucatán Peninsula, about 35 km (22 mi) inland from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The music of Mexico is very diverse and features a wide range of musical genres and performance styles. It has been influenced by a variety of cultures, most notably deriving from the culture of the Europeans, Indigenous, and Africans. Maya Music
The music of the ancient Mayan courts is described throughout native and Spanish 16th-century texts and is depicted in the art of the Classic Period (200–900 AD). The Maya played instruments such as trumpets, flutes, whistles, and drums, and used music to accompany funerals, celebrations, and other rituals. Although no written music has survived, archaeologists have excavated musical instruments and painted and carved depictions of the ancient Maya that show how music was a complex element of societal and religious structure. National Symphony Orchestra (Mexico)
The National Symphony Orchestra ( es, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional, OSN) is the most important symphony orchestra in Mexico. With its origins traced back as 1881, along with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, it is the second-oldest symphony orchestra in the American continent. The orchestra does not have a permanent venue but performs regularly in the Grand Hall of the Palace of Fine Arts (Palacio de Bellas Artes) in Mexico City. Juan Carlos Lomonaco (born 1969) is Music Director and Conductor of the Yucatán Symphony Orchestra, in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico. The repertory and versatility of Lomonaco's conducting covers diverse areas such as opera (Carmen, Traviata, Rigoletto, Boheme, Samson and Dalilah, Barber of Seville, Elixir of love) ballet (The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Onegin, Carmina Burana, Don Quixote), symphonic music, chamber music, and multimedia performances. The Yucatán Symphony Orchestra ( es, Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán – OSY) is an orchestra based in Mérida, Yucatán, México. History The OSY was founded February 2004 in Mérida, Yucatán thru a joint venture by Yucatán State Government and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán foundation. Its main performing venue is the Peón Contreras theater in Mérida.
