Yaakov Bodo
Yaakov Bodo ( he, יעקב (יענק'לה) בודו; born 28 March 1931) is an Israeli actor and comedian. Biography Yaakov (Yankele) Bodo was born in Romania in 1931 and spoke only Yiddish until the age of 7. He immigrated with his family to Israel in 1950 and settled in Afula. His grandparents were Zionists who helped establish Kfar Hasidim and Kiryat Haroshet (now part of Kiryat Tiv'on) after they emigrated to Mandate Palestine in 1933. Bodo is married with three children and has five grandchildren. He is married to his wife and personal manager, Ester, whom he met in Afula. Acting and film career A year after his arrival in Israel, Bodo joined the Israel Defense Forces, where he first assembled and led the Southern Command Troupe. Following the disbanding of that troupe in 1954, he was assigned the creation of the Northern Command troupe, which he led for three-and-a-half years. Itzik Manger Prize
The Itzik Manger Prize for outstanding contributions to Yiddish literature was established in 1968, shortly before Itzik Manger's death in 1969. Manger "was and remains one of the best-known twentieth-century Yiddish poets." The Prize has been described as the "most prestigious in Yiddish letters". Apparently no Manger Prizes have been awarded after 1999. History The prize was initiated by Meyer Weisgal, who was frustrated when Manger—then very ill—was denied the Israel Prize. The inaugural prize was given to Manger himself at a banquet on October 31, 1968. The banquet was attended by Golda Meir, then the prime minister of Israel, and by Zalman Shazar, then president. Joshua Sobol ( he, יהושע סובול; born 24 August 1939), is an Israeli playwright, writer, and theatre director. Biography Joshua Sobol was born in Tel Mond. His mother's family fled the pogroms in Europe in 1922 and his father's family immigrated from Poland in 1934 to escape the Nazis. Sobol is married to Edna, set and costume designer. They have a daughter, Neta, and a son, Yahli Sobol, a singer and writer. Sobol studied at the Sorbonne, Paris, and graduated with a diploma in philosophy. Theatre career Sobol's first play was performed in 1971 by the Municipal Theatre in Haifa, where Sobol worked from 1984 to 1988 as a playwright and later assistant artistic director. Hebrew
Hebrew (; ; ) is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays. Etymology The word "play" is from Middle English pleye, from Old English plæġ, pleġa, plæġa ("play, exercise; sport, game; drama, applause"). The word "wright" is an archaic English term for a craftsman or builder (as in a wheelwright or cartwright). The words combine to indicate a person who has "wrought" words, themes, and other elements into a dramatic form—a play. (The homophone with "write" is coincidental.) The first recorded use of the term "playwright" is from 1605, 73 years before the first written record of the term "dramatist". It appears to have been first used in a pejorative sense by Ben Jonson to suggest a mere tradesman fashioning works for the theatre. Yoni Eilat
Yoni Eilat ( he, יוני אילת; November 5, 1975) is an Israeli actor and singer. Eilat is a graduate of Beit Zvi, the Academy of Performing Arts in Israel. He has been performing since 2001 in different theater productions, children's plays and musicals. He is best known for his solo performances of Yiddish and Israeli songs ("shira betzibur"), which he performed throughout Israel and the world. He is an ensemble member at Yiddishpiel Theater - the Israeli National Yiddish Theater. For his contribution to the Yiddish culture he is a winner of three Yiddishpiel Awards. In 2010, Eilat released his first album, ''Zigayner Neshume'' (, Gypsy Soul): 11 Yiddish versions of Gypsy folk music. The songs were performed by Eilat as part of the 2011 International Jewish Music Festival in Amsterdam.
