Yerevan City Council elections were held on 14 May 2017. The Republican Party of Armenia won 71.25% of the total vote, the Way Out Alliance won 21%, while Yerkir Tsirani won 7.75%. Yerevan City Council
The Yerevan City Council () is the lawmaking body of the city of Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia. It has 65 members elected by Party-list proportional representation system, headed by the Mayor of Yerevan. The Council serves as a check against the mayor in a mayor-council government model. The council monitors performance of city agencies and makes land use decisions, as well as, legislating on a variety of other issues. The City Council also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget and each member is limited to three consecutive terms in office and can run again after a four-year respite. Taron Margaryan
Taron Andraniki Margaryan ( arm, Տարոն Անդրանիկի Մարգարյան, born 17 April 1978, Yerevan) is a politician from Armenia. He was the 11th mayor of Yerevan from 2011 to 2018. Head of community and early career From 2001 to 2003, he worked as a leading specialist for Armenia's State Committee of Real Estate Cadastre in the territorial unit of Nor Nork, and later became the head of the department. In 2003, he was appointed as the Deputy Head of the Ministry of Bioresources Management Agency. In 2005, he was elected at the age of 27 as head of the district of Avan in the city of Yerevan and was re-elected in 2008 for a second term. During Margaryan's two terms in office, the district of Avan was recognized by Armenia as the best district for two years in a row. Nikol Pashinyan
Nikol Vovayi Pashinyan ( hy, Նիկոլ Վովայի Փաշինյան, ; born 1 June 1975) is an Armenian politician serving as the prime minister of Armenia since 8 May 2018. A journalist by profession, Pashinyan founded his own newspaper in 1998, which was shut down a year later for libel. He was sentenced for one year for defamation against then Minister of National Security Serzh Sargsyan. He edited the newspaper ''Haykakan Zhamanak'' ("Armenian Times") from 1999 to 2012. A supporter of Armenia's first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, he was highly critical of second president Robert Kocharyan, Defense Minister Serzh Sargsyan, and their allies, frequently referring to them as the "Karabakh Clan". Pashinyan was also critical of Armenia's close relations with Russia, and promoted establishing closer relations with Turkey instead. Zaruhi Postanjyan ( hy, Զարուհի Փոստանջյան; born January 16, 1972, Yerevan) is an Armenian Member of Parliament since 2007, a public activist and a member of Heritage board. She was the head of "Heritage" faction of National Assembly of Armenia. Early life Zaruhi Postanjyan was born on January 16, 1972 in Yerevan, Armenia. She graduated from the Yerevan MYUD Law Institute in 1994. Career Postanjyan worked as a lawyer of Helsinki Association NGO, Armenia in 1998-1998. She received a patent on advocacy in 1999. She was a lawyer in Women’s Rights Center NGO in 1999-2000. She was the lawyer at the Wrestling Olympic Youth Sport School of Armenia. The Apricot Country Party ( hy, Երկիր ծիրանի կուսակցություն, translit=Yerkir tsirani kusakts’ut’yun), also known as Yerkir Tsirani is a political party in Armenia. History The party was established in March 2017, prior to the 2017 Yerevan City Council election. Party leader Zaruhi Postanjyan, a former member of the Heritage party, was nominated to run for Mayor of Yerevan. Following the election, Postanjyan came in third place. The Way Out Alliance ( hy, «Ելք» դաշինք, ԵԼՔ; ''YELK Dashink, YELQ'') or Yelk Alliance or simply Yelk or Way Out was a liberal political alliance of three political parties in Armenia: Civil Contract, Bright Armenia and the Hanrapetutyun Party. It was formed on 12 December 2016, before the 2017 Armenian parliamentary election.
