Xiaolin Pingpu Cultural Museum
The Xiaolin Pingpu Cultural Museum () is a museum in Jiaxian District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. History The museum was officially opened in 1996. In August 2009, it was destroyed by Typhoon Morakot. It was then rebuilt afterwards with a cost of NT$280 million. The reconstruction work was completed in 2012. Architecture The museum building spans over an area of 6,453 m2. It is housed in a two-story building with a theme of earth-terrace house. Its roof is decorated with straws and its wall is decorated with bamboos. Exhibitions The museum displays various aspects about the plain indigenous people of Taiwan. It exhibits the traditional agriculture and hunting methods of the indigenous people. It also features the history of the rebuilding efforts of the local community after the 2009 Typhoon Morakot. Jiasian District
Jiasian District, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency () is a District (Taiwan), rural district in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. Located far from the coast, the township is regarded as a gateway to Taiwan's Central Mountain Range. History Qing Dynasty During the reign of Qianlong Emperor of Taiwan under Qing rule, Qing Dynasty, there was a person named Jiasian who came to the area to develop the land. Later on, people from Fujian and Guangdong migrated there to settle down. The government also established an office in the area for administration purpose. Empire of Japan After the Treaty of Shimonoseki, handover of Taiwan from Qing Dynasty to Taiwan under Japanese rule, Empire of Japan in 1895, the government established Aliguan police station in the area and applied police presence in 1902. Typhoon Morakot
Typhoon Morakot, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Kiko, was the deadliest typhoon to impact Taiwan in recorded history. The eighth named storm and fourth typhoon of the 2009 Pacific typhoon season, Morakot wrought catastrophic damage in Taiwan, leaving 673 people dead and 26 missing, and causing roughly NT$110 billion (US$3.3 billion) in damages. Morakot originated as a tropical depression in the West Pacific on August 2. The system initially moved northeastward, before taking a westward track, developing into a tropical storm on August 3, with the JMA giving it the name ''Morakot''. The storm gradually strengthened as it moved towards Taiwan, intensifying into a Category 1-equivalent typhoon on August 5. Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples
Taiwanese indigenous peoples (formerly Taiwanese aborigines), also known as Formosan people, Austronesian Taiwanese, Yuanzhumin or Gaoshan people, are the indigenous peoples of Taiwan, with the nationally recognized subgroups numbering about 569,000 or 2.38% of the island's population. This total is increased to more than 800,000 if the indigenous peoples of the plains in Taiwan are included, pending future official recognition. When including those of mixed ancestry, such a number is possibly more than a million. Academic research suggests that their ancestors have been living on Taiwan for approximately 6,500 years.
