Winsum
Winsum () is a town and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 the municipality merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Eemsmond to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. The town of Winsum was officially established in 1057 as the fusion of three historic villages: Obergum (North), Winsum (center) and Bellingeweer (South). The majority of the town's 8,000 inhabitants commute to the nearby city Groningen. The town boasts two traditional Dutch wind mills, two historic churches, two canals, and one of the Netherlands' oldest taverns. The two mills, "De Ster" ("The Star") and "De Vriendschap" ("The Friendship") were built in 1851 and 1801 respectively. The building that the tavern "De Gouden Karper" ("The Golden Carp") now occupies has been in use as a tavern since the 16th century, and is the oldest (unverified) in the Netherlands. Wigbolt Ripperda
Wigbolt, Baron Ripperda (1535? – 16 July 1573) was the city governor of Haarlem when the city was under siege by the Spanish army in the Eighty Years' War. Biography Wigbolt Ripperda was the son of Baron Focko Ripperda van Winsum and Baroness Clara van Ewsum, and born in Winsum. The Ripperda family was one of the oldest and most powerful noble families in the Ommelanden, nowadays known as the province of Groningen in The Netherlands. Focko and Clara Ripperda had four sons: Peter, Asinge, Onno, Wigbolt and Johanna, a daughter. Wigbolt studied in Geneva and Orléans, together with his brother Onno. There he studied Latin and other languages. In Geneva, where Calvin was preaching, he got into contact with Protestantism, the new religion that inspired the Dutch Revolt. The 2013 Energiewacht Tour is the third edition of the Energiewacht Tour women's cycling stage race. It is rated by the UCI as category 2.2, and is held between 3 and 7 April 2013 in the Netherlands. 2013 Dutch National Time Trial Championships – Women's Time Trial
The Women's time trial of the 2013 Dutch National Time Trial Championships (''NK tijdrijden'') cycling took place in and around Winsum, nearby the city Groningen, in the Netherlands on 19 June 2013. Winsum got the event due to the success of the 2012 Energiewacht Tour. The individual time trial at the 2013 Energiewacht Tour took place on the same course. Ellen van Dijk was the defending champion, who won the national title at the 2012 Dutch National Time Trial Championships. Ellen van Dijk won the time trial in a time of 33’ 56", 39 seconds ahead of Loes Gunnewijk and 61 seconds of Annemiek van Vleuten. Preview Ellen van Dijk, the 2012 Dutch national champion, was the main favourite for the title. 2012 Energiewacht Tour
The 2012 Energiewacht Tour was the second edition of the Energiewacht Tour women's cycling stage race. It was rated by the UCI as category 2.2, and was held between 4 and 8 April 2012 in the Netherlands. The tour was won by Ina-Yoko Teutenberg ahead of Ellen van Dijk and Marianne Vos. Obergum
Obergum is part of the town Winsum ( Groningen, Netherlands) that lies north of the Winsumerdiep. Originally it was a separate village. Bedum
Bedum (; gos, Beem) is a former municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. Populated by inhabitants in , Bedum is one of the larger of Groningen's several satellite towns. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of De Marne, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. Bedum is the site of three supermarkets, several pubs, and a leaning church tower, dubbed "the leaning tower of Bedum". Footballer Arjen Robben was born in Bedum (23 January 1984).
