Eemsmond
Eemsmond (; en, Ems Mouth) is a former municipality with a population of 15,864 in the north of the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. History The municipality of Hefshuizen was established on 1 January 1979 by merging the municipalities of Uithuizen and Uithuizermeeden. On 1 January 1990, the municipalities of Kantens, Usquert, and Warffum were added. On 1 January 1992, the name of the municipality was changed from ''Hefshuizen'' to ''Eemsmond'', which means Ems Mouth. Warffum
Warffum (Gronings: Waarvum)is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Het Hogeland. It had a population of around 2,175 in January 2017. History The history of Warffum can be traced back to at least 600 AD, and it has been estimated that the village was founded as far back as the eighth century. In 1893 a train station was opened in Warffum, connecting Warffum to Groningen and Roodeschool. It was a separate municipality until 1990, when it became a part of Hefshuizen, which has been known as Eemsmond since 1 January 1992. Bedum
Bedum (; gos, Beem) is a former municipality and a town in the northeastern Netherlands. Populated by inhabitants in , Bedum is one of the larger of Groningen's several satellite towns. On 1 January 2019 it merged with the municipalities of De Marne, Eemsmond and Winsum to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. Bedum is the site of three supermarkets, several pubs, and a leaning church tower, dubbed "the leaning tower of Bedum". Footballer Arjen Robben was born in Bedum (23 January 1984). Bedum has a railway station - Bedum railway station. The leaning tower Bedum's 36-metre tower of the St Walfridus church has been calculated as now leaning at a greater angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Winsum
Winsum () is a town and a former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. On 1 January 2019 the municipality merged with the municipalities of Bedum, De Marne and Eemsmond to form the new municipality Het Hogeland. The town of Winsum was officially established in 1057 as the fusion of three historic villages: Obergum (North), Winsum (center) and Bellingeweer (South). The majority of the town's 8,000 inhabitants commute to the nearby city Groningen. The town boasts two traditional Dutch wind mills, two historic churches, two canals, and one of the Netherlands' oldest taverns. The two mills, "De Ster" ("The Star") and "De Vriendschap" ("The Friendship") were built in 1851 and 1801 respectively. Eemshaven
Eemshaven (; en, Ems Harbor) is a seaport in the province of Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. In 1968, the Dutch government declared the Ems estuary (Eemsmond) to be an economic key region. One of the key developments for the region was the construction of a seaport called Eemshaven. The port was officially opened by Queen Juliana in 1973. Industry and shipping were slow to develop at the site. In 2013, a ferry service connects to the German island of Borkum. A ferry service to Rosyth, Scotland, was to start by late October 2019. The plan was officially abandoned in 2020. A number of power plants operate at the site. Both Electrabel and NUON operate a gas-fired power plant there while RWE Innogy operates a wind farm at the site. RWE is operating a coal-fired plant. Stitswerd is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland, Groningen, the Netherlands. It had a population of around 45 in January 2017. Stitswerd is located on a ''wierde'' near the estuary of the former river Fivel. Stitswerd has the highest postal code in the Netherlands (9999 XL). History The village was first mentioned in the second half of the 9th century as Stukisweret, and means "''terp'' (artificial living hill) of Stukki (person)". The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 13th century and is located on the ''terp'', however part of the terp has been excavated. The church is sometimes in service, but is also used for cultural activities. Stitswert was home to 209 people 1840. It had place name signs, however some have been removed. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1391 as "to Stertingahusum". The etymology is unclear. In 1590, the church was demolished, and never replaced. Startenhuizen was home to 112 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of about 17 houses.
