It sanctions band and solo piping competitions and has a membership of over fifty bands. History The association was founded in 1963 and was originally called the Pacific Coast Pipe Band Association. Later, it expanded geographically to include more of the Western United States, including bands in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah. It offers band, solo piping and drumming, and drum major competitions with accredited judges at WUSPBA-sanctioned events in several states, and it is a member of the Alliance of North American Pipe Band Associations. The association also maintains listof instructors within the area of its jurisdiction. Los Angeles Scottish Pipe Band
The Los Angeles Scots Pipe Band, or, more commonly, the LA Scots, is a pipe band located in Orange County, California. The LA Scots have competed at the grade one level since 1998. In February 2018, the Western United States Pipe Band Association granted a request by the LA Scots to move to Grade 2. During their time in Grade 1, the band placed ninth in the qualification round at the 2008 World Pipe Band Championships The World Pipe Band Championships is a pipe band competition held in Glasgow, Scotland. Prince Charles Pipe Band
Founded in 1967 to train young people in piping and drumming, the Prince Charles Pipe Band is an extensive organization which includes Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 5 pipe bands. (Competitive Pipe bands are ranked from Grade 1 as the highest to Novice Juvenile as the lowest.) The Grade 2 band was re-formed in late 2008 with a combination of members from the now defunct Grade 1 band, and newer talent from the lower grade bands. Throughout its history in many different competitive classes, the band has won major prizes including the Grade 2 World Pipe Band Championship in 2000, after which the band became of only three Grade 1 bands in the United States. Drum Major (marching Band)
A drum major or field commander is the leader of a marching band, drum and bugle corps, or pipe band, usually positioned at the head of the band or corps. The drum major is often dressed in more ornate clothing than the rest of the band or corps and is responsible for providing commands to the ensemble, leading them while marching, and directing them what to play, when to play, the dynamic or volume of playing, and what time to keep. The commands may be given verbally, through hand gestures, using a whistle or a baton, or with a mace. Although the drum major is the one conducting for the entire band to see and watch to keep time, the drum major is actually looking at the center snare's feet to keep time. Pipe Band
A pipe band is a musical ensemble consisting of pipers and drummers. The term pipes and drums, used by military pipe bands is also common. The most common form of pipe band consists of a section of pipers playing the Great Highland bagpipe, a section of snare drummers (often referred to as 'side drummers'), several tenor drummers and usually one, though occasionally two, bass drummers. The tenor drummers and bass drummer are referred to collectively as the 'bass section' (or in North America as the 'midsection'), and the entire drum section is collectively known as the drum corps. The band follows the direction of the pipe major; when on parade the band may be led by a drum major, who directs the band with a mace.
