Wyoming Highway 51 (WYO 51) is a long east-west Wyoming state highway located in Campbell and Crook Counties, between Gillette and Moorcroft. Route description Wyoming Highway 51 travels from the eastern outskirts of Gillette at an interchange with I-90/US 14/US 16 (Exit 128) and the eastern terminus of I-90 BUS east to the town of Moorcroft. Highway 51 travels east, passing through the communities of Wyodak and Rozet, south of the Campbell County fairground coal mines, and south of Wyodak power plant. Wyoming 51 is the old alignment for US 14/US 16; and for most of its length closely parallels Interstate 90 which carries US 14/US 16. Gillette (, '' jih-LET'') is a city in and the county seat of Campbell County, Wyoming, United States. The town was founded in 1891 as a major railway town on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The population was estimated at 32,030 as of July 1, 2019. Gillette's population increased 48% in the ten years after the 2000 census, which counted 19,646 residents after a boom in its local fossil fuel industries. Moorcroft is a town in Crook County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 946 at the 2020 census. History Moorcroft was incorporated on October 2, 1906. The exact meaning of Moorcroft is unknown but over the years has several suggested origins for the name. The town was named in 1876 after Alexander Moorcroft, an early settler from Northern England who built a cabin in the Black Hills of Wyoming. Crook County is a county in the northeastern section of the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 7,181, making it the third-least populous county in Wyoming. Interstate 90 (I-90) in the US state of Wyoming traverses the northeastern corner of the state, passing through the cities and communities of Sheridan, Buffalo, and Gillette. Route description I-90 enters Wyoming from Montana and heads south concurrent with US Highway 87 (US 87) through hilly grasslands. It curves to the southeast and meets an interchange that serves the small community of Parkman. Continuing southeast, the highway intersects US 14 at a diamond interchange. US 14 joins I-90 and US 87, and the three routes curve east.
