Campbell County, Wyoming
Campbell County is a county in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 47,026, making it the third-most populous county in Wyoming. Its county seat is Gillette. Campbell County comprises the Gillette, WY Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Campbell County was created in 1911 from land annexed from Crook and Weston Counties. It was named either for John Allen Campbell, a governor of the Wyoming Territory, or for Robert Campbell, an trapper and fur trader associated with William Henry Ashley. Robert Campbell (frontiersman)
Robert Campbell (February 12, 1804 – October 16, 1879) was an Irish immigrant who became an American frontiersman, fur trader and businessman. His St. Louis home is now preserved as a museum; the Campbell House Museum. Early life Robert Campbell was born on February 12, 1804. Campbell was a Presbyterian of Ulster Scots people, Scottish descent. He was born in his family's home, Aughalane (pronounced "Ochalane"). The house was built by Hugh Campbell in 1786 near Plumbridge, County Tyrone, in modern day Northern Ireland. Hugh placed a pair of stone plaques above the door, inscribing one with his name and the other with the coat of arms of the Duke of Argyll and Scottish clan chief, Chief of Clan Campbell in Scotland. Sheridan County is a county in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 30,921. The county seat is Sheridan. Its northern boundary abuts the Montana state border. Sheridan County comprises the Sheridan, WY Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Sheridan County was created by the legislature of the Wyoming Territory on March 9, 1888. The county was formed from a portion of Johnson County. Sheridan County was named for Philip Sheridan, a general in the American Civil War and controversial Indian fighter. A portion of Sheridan County was annexed in 1897 to create Big Horn County. Sheridan County boundary lines were also slightly altered in 1911, and again in 1929, after which it has retained its boundary lines to the present time. Wyoming Highway 387 (WYO 387) is a state road that travels from extreme northeast Natrona County, Wyoming through extreme southeast Johnson County, Wyoming and into southwest Campbell County, Wyoming. Route description Wyoming Highway 387 begins its west end at I-25/US 87 (exit 227). The Highway heads until it reaches the town of Midwest where it meets the northern terminus of Wyoming Highway 259 (Old US 87). WYO 387 continues east entering the town of Edgerton just shortly after leaving Midwest. At WYO 387 intersects the eastern terminus of Wyoming Highway 192 (Sussex Road). Wyoming Highway 59 (WYO 59) is a north–south state highway that runs from Douglas to the Montana–Wyoming State Line, where the roadway continues as Montana Highway 59. Route description Douglas Wyoming Highway 59 begins its southern end at an intersection with I-25 BUS/ US 20 BUS/ US 26 BUS/ US 87 BUS (W. Yellowstone Highway), the northern terminus of Wyoming Highway 94 (Esterbrook Road), and exit 140 of Interstate 25 in Douglas. Highway 59 then intersects Wyoming Highway 93 just north of its start. Wyoming Highway 51
Wyoming Highway 51 (WYO 51) is a long east-west Wyoming state highway located in Campbell and Crook Counties, between Gillette and Moorcroft. Route description Wyoming Highway 51 travels from the eastern outskirts of Gillette at an interchange with I-90/US 14/US 16 (Exit 128) and the eastern terminus of I-90 BUS east to the town of Moorcroft. Highway 51 travels east, passing through the communities of Wyodak and Rozet, south of the Campbell County fairground coal mines, and south of Wyodak power plant. Wyoming 51 is the old alignment for US 14/US 16; and for most of its length closely parallels Interstate 90 which carries US 14/US 16. Wyoming Highway 50
Wyoming Highway 50 (WYO 50) is a north–south Wyoming state highway located in the southwestern and central part of Campbell County that travels from Wyoming Highway 387 at Pine Tree Junction north to Interstate 90, US 14/US 16/WYO 59 in Gillette. Route description Wyoming Highway 50 starts at Wyoming Highway 387 in an area called Pine Tree Junction, located in southwestern Campbell County. WYO 50 heads due north, named 4J Road, and passes through the community of Savageton. Eighteen miles north of Savageton, Highway 50 turns and runs southwest to northeast until it reaches Gillette. Southwest of Gillette, at approximately 49 miles, WYO 50 changes names to Skyline Drive, as 4J Road, the old routing of WYO 50 into Gillette turns east. US 16
U.S. Route 16 (US 16) is an east–west United States Highway between Rapid City, South Dakota and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The highway's eastern terminus is at a junction with Interstate 90/U.S. Route 14 (I-90/US 14), concurrent with I-190, in Rapid City, South Dakota. The western terminus is the east entrance to Yellowstone National Park, concurrent with US 14 and US 20. U.S. 16 used to extend all the way to Michigan, but has been truncated in favor of Interstates 90 and 96. A ballot initiative that passed in 2022, allocated funds to extend U.S. 16 through both Joe Creek and Peoria Flats.
