Sheridan County, Wyoming
Sheridan County is a county in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 30,921. The county seat is Sheridan. Its northern boundary abuts the Montana state border. Sheridan County comprises the Sheridan, WY Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Sheridan County was created by the legislature of the Wyoming Territory on March 9, 1888. The county was formed from a portion of Johnson County. Sheridan County was named for Philip Sheridan, a general in the American Civil War and controversial Indian fighter. A portion of Sheridan County was annexed in 1897 to create Big Horn County. Sheridan County boundary lines were also slightly altered in 1911, and again in 1929, after which it has retained its boundary lines to the present time. Philip Sheridan
General of the Army Philip Henry Sheridan (March 6, 1831 – August 5, 1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with General-in-chief Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces under General Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called "The Burning" by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched-earth tactics in the war. In 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Sheridan fought in later years in the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Interstate 90 (Wyoming)
Interstate 90 (I-90) in the US state of Wyoming traverses the northeastern corner of the state, passing through the cities and communities of Sheridan, Buffalo, and Gillette. Route description I-90 enters Wyoming from Montana and heads south concurrent with US Highway 87 (US 87) through hilly grasslands. It curves to the southeast and meets an interchange that serves the small community of Parkman. Continuing southeast, the highway intersects US 14 at a diamond interchange. US 14 joins I-90 and US 87, and the three routes curve east. After the freeway bends back to the southeast, it intersects the eastern end of Wyoming Highway 345 (WYO 345), then crosses the BNSF Railway (formerly the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad) and the Tongue River. Wyoming Highway 335
Wyoming Highway 335 (WYO 335) is a roughly north-south Wyoming State Road located in central Sheridan County south of the city of Sheridan. Route description Wyoming Highway 335 begins its southern end at Sheridan County Route 26 (Red Grade Road) near the Bighorn National Forest and southwest of the unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) of Big Horn. Highway 335 heads east for just over 3 miles before turning due north for another 2.4 miles where WYO 335 has an intersection with Sheridan County Route 87 (Beaver Creek Road) as it curves back east to serve the community of Big Horn. Wyoming Highway 332 (WYO 332) is a north-south state highway in central Sheridan County, Wyoming United States, that connects U.S. Route 87 (US 87) and Wyoming Highway 335 (WYO 335), south of Sheridan, with Interstate 90 Business Loop I-90 BL)/U.S. Route 14 (US 14)/US 87 (South Main Street) in Sheridan. Wyoming Highway 331 (WYO 331) is a east-west Wyoming State Road located in central Sheridan County and links Beckton with Sheridan. Route description Wyoming Highway 331's western end is in the community of Beckton, west of Sheridan, at Sheridan County Route 53 (Big Goose Canyon Road). With the name Big Goose Canyon Road, it parallels Big Goose Creek to the north.
