Wyoming Highway 340 (WYO 340) is a east-west State Road in the U.S. state of Wyoming that runs through the community of Story in southern Sheridan County. Route description Wyoming Highway 340 travels from Sheridan County Route 2 just west of Story east into the community as North Piney Creek Road. It changes into Crooked Street as it turns southeast in Story and reaches its eastern end at Wyoming Highway 194. WYDOT
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is a government agency charged with overseeing transportation infrastructure for the U.S. state of Wyoming. Story, Wyoming
Story is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. As of the 2020 census, the CDP population was 903. History of the region The region around Story was part of the history of the American Frontier and the Old West, and of the conflicts between early settlers and the Plains Indians. The historic Bozeman Trail passed nearby in the mid-1860s, and Fort Phil Kearny, now a State Historic Site, lies just 5 miles south of town. Fort Sheridan was just to the north, near what is now the city of Sheridan. Fort Phil Kearny, known to the Plains Indians as the "hated post on the Little Piney", played an important role in Red Cloud's War (1866-1868), and the area around the fort was the site of the Fetterman massacre and the Wagon Box Fight. The Fetterman Fight (with 81 men killed on the U.S. side) was the worst military defeat suffered by the U.S. Army on the Great Plains, until the Battle of the Little Bighorn ten years later. Sheridan County is a county in the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 30,921. The county seat is Sheridan. Its northern boundary abuts the Montana state border. Sheridan County comprises the Sheridan, WY Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Sheridan County was created by the legislature of the Wyoming Territory on March 9, 1888. The county was formed from a portion of Johnson County. Wyoming Highway 194 (WYO 194) is a east–west State Road in the U.S. state of Wyoming that runs through the community of Story in southern Sheridan County. Route description Wyoming Highway 194 travels from an area called Grandma's Mountain and the state fish hatchery west of Story. It travels east into Story, a census-designated place (CDP), intersecting the western terminus of Wyoming Highway 340 (Crooked Street), before turning north at the eastern edge of the community and again east to end at Wyoming Highway 193. Wyoming Highway 194 lies entirely in Sheridan County, so it is an exception to the numbering rule. The Sheridan County numbering scheme indicates this route should be numbered between 330 and 349.
