World XV
A World XV is a rugby union team organised on an unofficial, ''ad hoc'' basis and typically composed of invited players from various countries. Several World XVs have been arranged by various bodies, often to take part in celebration and testimonial games, usually against national teams, but these are not considered test matches by most nations. History Argentina In 1980 and 1983, Argentina, played World XVs. The first match was played at Ferrocarril Oeste Stadium, Buenos Aires. Argentina went into half time ahead by 16 points to nil and despite an excellent display in the second half by the World XV Argentina were able to secure a 36–22 win. The second match was played in Atlanta Stadium, Buenos Aires, where Argentina secured a second victory 28–20. Rugby Union
Rugby union, commonly known simply as rugby, is a close-contact team sport that originated at Rugby School in the first half of the 19th century. One of the two codes of rugby football, it is based on running with the ball in hand. In its most common form, a game is played between two teams of 15 players each, using an oval-shaped ball on a rectangular field called a pitch. The field has H-shaped goalposts at both ends. Barry Wolmarans
Barend Johannes 'Barry' Wolmarans (born 22 March 1953 in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, South Africa) is a former South African rugby union player. Playing career Wolmarans made his provincial debut for Boland while studying at the Wellington Teachers College. He joined the Free State in 1975 and played 116 matches for the union and was part of the team that won the Currie Cup in 1976. At the time of his retirement in 1984, Wolmarans and his fly–half partner, De Wet Ras played together as a combination on 89 occasions, which was a South African provincial record at the time. Wolmarans made his test match debut for the Springboks against the World XV on 27 August 1977 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and scored a try in his debut test. Dawie Snyman
Dawid Stefanus Lubbe Snyman (born 5 July 1949) is a former South African rugby union player and coach. Playing career Snyman represented the Free State schools at two consecutive Craven Week tournaments. After school and completing his military training he enrolled at Stellenbosch University. In 1971, before playing provincial rugby, he was selected for the Springboks to tour Australia. Although he did not play in any test matches during the tour, being selected for the team made him only the third player, after JC van der Westhuizen and Danie Craven to represent the Springboks before playing for a province. He made his provincial debut for Western Province later during the 1971 season. Snyman's test debut was in 1972 at Ellis Park against the touring English side captained by John Pullin. Hermanus Potgieter
Hermanus Lambertus Potgieter (born 11 January 1953 in Kirkwood, Eastern Cape, South Africa) is a former South African rugby union player. Playing career Potgieter attended the University of Stellenbosch for two years in 1973 and 1974, after which he relocated to the University of the Free State. He went on the play his senior provincial rugby for the Free State and Eastern Province. Potgieter made his test match debut for the Springboks against the World XV on 27 August 1977 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria and scored a try on his test debut. Gerrie Germishuys
Johannes Servaas Germishuys, best known as Gerrie Germishuys (born 29 October 1949 in Port Shepstone, Natal) is a former South African rugby union player who played wing for the Springboks. Biography As a winger, Germishuys was known for his speed and agility. His international rugby debut was on 22 June 1974 for the Springboks against the British Lions. He also played against the All Blacks in 1976 and the Lions in 1980. In 1981, he participated in the infamous South Africa rugby team tour of New Zealand. His last cap was on 20 September 1981 against the United States rugby team. Theuns Stofberg
Marthinus Theunis Steyn 'Theuns' Stofberg was the captain of the South Africa national rugby union team (Springboks) for four tests between 1980 and 1984. He is remembered for his speed and his size, both remarkable for a flank at that time. Youth and early career He was born Marthinus Theunis Steyn Stofberg (named after the President of the Orange Free State), in Villiers, Free State on 6 June 1955. He attended school at Grey College in Bloemfontein, one of the strongholds in South African rugby. He started his provincial career playing for Free State while he was still studying at the University of the Free State. When he was called up for his conscription he was moved to Pretoria where he started playing for Northern Transvaal, currently called the Blue Bulls. Hugo Porta
Hugo Porta (born 11 September 1951) is a former Argentine Rugby Union footballer, an inductee of both the International Rugby Hall of Fame and IRB Hall of Fame, and one of the best fly-halves the sport has seen. During the 1970s and 1980s, he played 58 times for ''Los Pumas'', captaining them on 34 occasions, including leading them during the first World Cup in 1987. Porta made his international debut in 1971. His best performances came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with 1977 draw with France, the Pumas' 1979 24–13 win against Australia, and a 21–21 tie with the All Blacks on 2 November 1985. Morné Du Plessis
Morné du Plessis Order of Ikhamanga, OIS (; born 21 October 1949) is a former South African rugby union player often described as one of the South Africa national rugby union team, Springboks' most successful captains. During the five years from 1975 to 1980 that he served as captain, the Springboks won 13 of 15 matches, giving Du Plessis an 86.66% success rate as captain. Du Plessis's father, Felix du Plessis, Felix, was also the captain of a Springbok rugby team, and his mother, Pat, captained the South African women's field hockey, hockey side. Felix and Morné are the only father-and-son duo so far to have both been Springbok rugby captains, and Morné is the only Springbok captain born to parents both of whom captained national sports sides. Willie John McBride
William James McBride, CBE, better known as Willie John McBride (born 6 June 1940) is a former rugby union footballer who played as a Lock (rugby union), lock for Ireland national rugby union team, Ireland and the British and Irish Lions. He played 63 Test match (rugby union), Tests for Ireland including eleven as captain, and toured with the Lions five times; a record that gave him 17 Lions Test caps. He also captained the most successful ever Lions side, which toured South Africa in 1974. Youth McBride was born at Toomebridge, County Antrim. JPR Williams
John Peter Rhys Williams (born 2 March 1949) is a former Welsh rugby union player who represented Wales in international rugby during their Golden Era in the 1970s. He became known universally as J. P. R. Williams (or sometimes just as JPR) after 1973 when J. J. Williams (also John) joined the Welsh team. Playing in the position of full back, he was noted for his aggressive attacking style. With his long sideboards and socks around his ankles, "JPR" was an iconic figure on the legendary 1970s Wales team.
