Women's World Chess Championship 2023
The 2023 Women's World Chess Championship is an upcoming chess match for the Women's World Chess Championship title. It is contested by the defending champion, Ju Wenjun, and her challenger, Lei Tingjie, the winner of the Women's Candidates Tournament 2022–23, 2022–23 Candidates tournament. It will be played in two Chinese cities from 5 to 25 July 2023, giving each participant a home-field advantage. Candidates tournament The second edition of the women's Candidates was played in the last quarter of 2022. In contrast to the previous edition, this was played in a knock-out format. It has been speculated that the pairings were made to prevent a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russia vs Ukraine matchup before the final. It featured eight players, including three former Women's World champions. In the final, Lei Tingjie and Tan Zhongyi played a six game match to determine the Challenger spot. Ju Wenjun (2016
Ju Wenjun (; born 31 January 1991) is a Chinese Grandmaster (chess), chess grandmaster. She is the current Women's World Chess Champion. In March 2017 she became the fifth woman to achieve a Elo rating system, rating of 2600. She is a four-time Women's World Chess Champion, having won the title first in Women's World Chess Championship 2018 (May), May 2018 (against Tan Zhongyi). She then defended her title in Women's World Chess Championship 2018 (November), November 2018 (against Kateryna Lagno), Women's World Chess Championship 2020, 2020 (against Aleksandra Goryachkina), and Women's World Chess Championship 2023, 2023 (against Lei Tingjie). Ekaterina Aleksandrovna Lagno (russian: Екатерина Александровна Лагно, ; born 27 December 1989) is a Russian (formerly Ukrainian) chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, she earned the title Woman Grandmaster (WGM) at the age of 12 years, four months and two days. In 2007, she was awarded the grandmaster title. She is a twice European Women's Champion and won two team gold medals at the Women's Chess Olympiad, in 2006 and 2014, playing for Ukraine and Russia respectively. She also won team gold at the Women's World Team Championship in 2013 playing for the Ukrainian team and in 2017,2021 playing for Russian team. The main events in the 2023 chess calendar are the World Chess Championship 2023 and Women's World Chess Championship 2023. The top three finishers from the Chess World Cup 2023, the winner and runner-up of the FIDE Grand Swiss Tournament 2023 and the winner of the FIDE Circuit 2023 will qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2024.
