Wolverhampton Corporation Tramways
Wolverhampton Corporation Tramways operated a tramway service in Wolverhampton between 1902 and 1928. History On 1 May 1900, for the sum of £26,750, Wolverhampton Corporation bought the Wolverhampton Tramways Company which had operated a standard gauge horse-drawn tramway since 1878. At the start of operation, the drivers and conductors were equipped with a coat and trousers of blue cloth with orange piping, and a peaked “W.C.T.” cap. A modernisation scheme followed immediately re-gauging to 3'6" and electrification. The tramway was unique in using the Lorain Stud contact system, and because of this, connections to other networks in the area could not be made until 1921, when the council decided to convert to overhead wiring. Wolverhampton () is a city, metropolitan borough and administrative centre in the West Midlands, England. The population size has increased by 5.7%, from around 249,500 in 2011 to 263,700 in 2021. Wolverhampton Tramways Company operated a tramway service in Wolverhampton between 1878 and 1900. History The Wolverhampton Tramways Order of 1877 authorised the Wolverhampton Tramways Company to construct a horse-drawn tramway in Wolverhampton. The company developed three routes from Queen Street in Wolverhampton * Tettenhall * Willenhall * Bilston and Moxley. The company bought Landore-Siemens Steel Company rails from Swansea, and laid them on patent chairs by Mr. Kincaid C.E., who was the engineer to the company. The 1,800 tons of rails were paved on either side with 10,000 tons of granite sets from Mount Sorrell and the Clee HIlls. The cost of laying the rails was about £50,000 and £10,000 was needed for yards, stabling, horses and tramcars. The company bought a mixture of tramcars, some from H. Stud Contact System
The stud contact system is an obsolete ground-level power supply system for electric trams. Power supply studs were set in the road at intervals and connected to a buried electric cable by switches operated by magnets on the tramcars. Current was collected from the studs by a "skate" or "ski collector" under the tramcar. The system was popular for a while in the early 1900s but soon fell out of favour because of the unreliability of the magnetic switches, largely due to friction and rapid corrosion affecting its cast iron moving components. The United Electric Car Company was a tramcar manufacturer from 1905 to 1917 in Preston, Lancashire, England. History The Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works was formed in 1897 registered on 25 April 1898 to acquire works at Preston, Lancashire. It was founded by two Scots, W. B. Dick and John Kerr. They formed a new company, English Electrical Manufacturing based in a new West Works on Strand Road, Preston in 1900, to build the electric motors for their trams. In 1905 the Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works took over two other works, including G.F. Milnes & Co. in Hadley, Shropshire, the name being then changed to United Electric Car Co.
