Wisconsin Assembly, District 40
The 40th Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in central Wisconsin, the district comprises most of Waupaca County and much of the eastern half of Waushara County, as well as a part of western Outagamie County. It includes the cities of Clintonville, Manawa, Marion, New London, Waupaca, and Weyauwega, as well as the villages of Big Falls, Fremont, Iola, Ogdensburg, and Scandinavia. It also contains most of Hartman Creek State Park and historic sites such as Waupaca's Main Street Historic District and the King Wisconsin Veterans Home, established for veterans of the American Civil War, containing the Veterans Cottages Historic District, the Commandant's Residence Home, and the Veterans Home Chapel. Iola, Wisconsin
Iola is a village in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,236 at the 2020 census. The village is bordered by the towns of Iola and Scandinavia. The community was named after a Potawatomi girl. Geography Iola is located at (44.507951, -89.128661). The Republican Party, also referred to as the GOP ("Grand Old Party"), is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. Veterans Cottages Historic District
The Veterans Cottages Historic District is located in King, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. History The cottages were built after the Grand Army of the Republic decided to make homes where war veterans and their wives could live together, an unusual step for the time, now known as the Wisconsin Veterans Home. In 1929, the state took control of the site and has since continued to use it for veterans' housing. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. Wisconsin Veterans Home
The Wisconsin Veterans' Home, in King Wisconsin, is an old soldiers' home in Waupaca County, Wisconsin on the scenic Chain O' Lakes, Wisconsin. The American Civil War saw significant advances in battlefield medicine. The lower mortality rate of injured soldiers led to the sentiment that the United States should provide care for its surviving injured veterans. The city of Waupaca purchased the land and buildings of the defunct Greenwood Park Hotel and donated the grounds to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) for the site of a veterans' home. Civil War physician and GAR member Dr. Frederick Marden was chosen to head a five-member committee to organize a Wisconsin veterans' home. Among Dr. Marden's innovative ideas put into action was the practice of allowing wives and widows of veterans to live at the home, as well as the idea of allowing members to live semi-independently in cottages. King is a census-designated place in Town of Farmington, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,750. Before 2010, it was part of the Chain O' Lakes-King, Wisconsin CDP. History In 1887, the area was selected by the Grand Army of the Republic for the site of a veterans' home.
