King is a census-designated place in Town of Farmington, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 1,750. Before 2010, it was part of the Chain O' Lakes-King, Wisconsin CDP. History In 1887, the area was selected by the Grand Army of the Republic for the site of a veterans' home. The Soldiers' Home was later renamed the Wisconsin Veterans Home. The community is named for General Charles King, a Wisconsin soldier and head of the state's National Guard. Chain O' Lakes-King is a former census-designated place (CDP) in Waupaca County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,215 at the 2000 census. It is located within the towns of Farmington and Dayton. For the 2010 census, Chain O' Lakes-King was split into the CDPs of Chain O' Lakes and King. Visitor attractions The CDP is home to the Wisconsin Veterans Home, located in King. Also in the CDP are the Chain O' Lakes, a series of 22 interconnected lakes frequented by tourists. In the Menominee language, the chain of lakes are called ''Kūwicīqsow-Nepēhsaeh''. State Trunk Highway 22 (often called Highway 22, STH-22 or WIS 22) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The route's trajectory is mostly south to north, with the exception of the segment between Shawano and the northern terminus being east–west. It is generally a two-lane surface road providing a connecting route between Waupaca, Shawano, Gillett and Oconto. Various urban sections have multilane segments. Route description WIS 22's southern terminus is in Columbia County at the junction of US 51 and WIS 60 in North Leeds, two miles (3 km) east of Arlington. Wisconsin Army National Guard
The Wisconsin Army National Guard ("Guard") has dual state and federal roles, and is jointly funded and maintained by both governments. Its federal mission is to provide trained units to the United States Army in time of war or national emergency. Its state mission is to help civil authorities protect life and property and preserve peace, order, and public safety in times of natural or human-caused emergencies. The governor, who is the commander in chief of the Guard when it is not activated for federal service, appoints the adjutant general who directs the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs, of which the Guard is a part. Charles King (general)
Charles King (October 12, 1844 – March 17, 1933) was an American soldier and a distinguished writer. Biography Born in New York capital, Albany, King was the son of Civil War general Rufus King, grandson of Columbia University president Charles King, and great grandson of Rufus King, who was one of the signers of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787, in Philadelphia. He graduated from West Point in 1866 and served in the Army during the Indian Wars under George Crook. He was wounded in the arm and head during the Battle of Sunset Pass forcing his retirement from the regular army as a captain in 1879. During this time he became acquainted with Buffalo Bill Cody. King would later write scripts for several of Cody's silent films. He also served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1882 until 1897, becoming Adjutant General in 1895. Wisconsin Veterans Home
The Wisconsin Veterans' Home, in King Wisconsin, is an old soldiers' home in Waupaca County, Wisconsin on the scenic Chain O' Lakes, Wisconsin. The American Civil War saw significant advances in battlefield medicine. The lower mortality rate of injured soldiers led to the sentiment that the United States should provide care for its surviving injured veterans. The city of Waupaca purchased the land and buildings of the defunct Greenwood Park Hotel and donated the grounds to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) for the site of a veterans' home. Civil War physician and GAR member Dr. Frederick Marden was chosen to head a five-member committee to organize a Wisconsin veterans' home. Among Dr. Marden's innovative ideas put into action was the practice of allowing wives and widows of veterans to live at the home, as well as the idea of allowing members to live semi-independently in cottages.
