Willie Hamilton (academic)
William Trevor Hamilton CBE, MD, FRCP, FRCGP (born 1958) is an expert in cancer diagnosis. He is professor of primary care diagnostics at the University of Exeter. He specialises in primary care diagnostics, with particular expertise in cancer. Early life and education Hamilton was born in 1958 in Belfast. He moved to England to study medicine at the University of Bristol, qualifying in 1982, having added an intercalated degree in Medical Microbiology in 1979. Following this, general medical training and 2.5 years as a physician in Malawi, he trained to become a general practitioner in 1989. Hamilton became a member of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) of the United Kingdom in 1986 and the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) in 1989. In 2001, Hamilton was forced to take a break from his career in general practice due to an infected cochlear implant and began full-time research. Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread.
