William Willoughby Miller
William Willoughby Miller (September 12, 1880 – 1959) was a merchant and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Biggar from 1929 to 1934 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Conservative. He was born in Brockville, Ontario, the son of Willoughby Miller and Isabella Baker, and was educated in Greenbush. Miller joined his brother in New York City, where he worked in a grocery and butcher business for three years. In 1906, he married Lillian Powell. Miller farmed in Leeds County for six years and then, in 1910, travelled west to Biggar, Saskatchewan, where he purchased a general store. He later became the local dealer for Chevrolet and McLaughlin automobiles and the owner of a garage. Miller served on the Biggar city council and the local school board. Biggar (former Provincial Electoral District)
Biggar is a former provincial electoral division for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, centred on the town of Biggar. This district was created before the 3rd Saskatchewan general election in 1912. The riding was dissolved and combined with the Rosetown district to form Rosetown-Biggar before the 23rd Saskatchewan general election in 1995. It was the constituency of Premier Woodrow S. Lloyd. It is now part of the Biggar-Sask Valley constituency. The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan is a conservative political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Prior to 1942, it was known as the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan. Leeds County, Ontario
Leeds County is a historic county in the Canadian province of Ontario. The county was first surveyed in 1792 as one of the nineteen counties created by Sir John Graves Simcoe in preparation for the United Empire Loyalists to settle here. The county took its name from Francis Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds; the "Leeds" of the Dukedom referred to Leeds in West Yorkshire, England and not for Leeds, Kent, England. Biggar is a town in central Saskatchewan, Canada. It is located on Highway 14, west of Saskatoon, the province's most populous city. Biggar has become well known for its unusual town slogan, an Olympic athlete, and a world-record deer. The town was featured on American morning newsmagazine ''The Today Show'' in February 2010 as part of an ongoing Canadian-oriented segment during the 2010 Winter Olympics. History Biggar was incorporated as a village in 1909. It was named after William Hodgins Biggar, general counsel of the Grand Trunk Pacific (GTP) railway which had come through the area in 1908. Prior to that, the major means of transportation was via the nearby Swift Current-Battleford Trail. McLaughlin Automobile
McLaughlin Motor Car Company Limited was a Canadian manufacturer of automobiles headquartered in Oshawa, Ontario. Founded by Robert McLaughlin (industrialist), Robert McLaughlin, it once was the largest carriage manufacturing factory in the British Empire. Around 1905, Robert's son, Samuel McLaughlin, Colonel "Sam" McLaughlin starting building automobiles. By 1907 it had grown to include the manufacture of McLaughlin automobiles with Buick engines and in 1915, it manufactured Chevrolet vehicles for the U.S. and Canadian market. The carriage end of the business was then sold to Carriage Factories Limited of Orillia, Ontario. James Brockett Tudhopes Carriage Factories would end carriage production towards manufacturing of truck and car parts.
