William Melville Drennan
William Melville Drennan (November 15, 1853 – May 28, 1900) was a merchant and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Kingston from 1890 to 1891. The son of Samuel Trangott Drennan, a native of Ireland, he was born in Kingston. Canada West, and was educated at the Kingston College Institute. At the age of 15, he worked in the hardware business in Montreal and later worked as a travelling salesman in New York and Canada. Drennan joined the Princess of Wales Own Rifles in 1863, serving as an Ensign during the Fenian Raids of 1870 for which he received the Canada General Service Medal. He then served as a Captain in the Kingston Field Battery. In 1878, Drennan married May E. Moore. He then went into business on his own as a hardware merchant. Kingston, Ontario
Kingston is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north-eastern end of Lake Ontario, at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (south end of the Rideau Canal). The city is midway between Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. Kingston is also located nearby the Thousand Islands, a tourist region to the east, and the Prince Edward County tourist region to the west. Samuel Drennan
Samuel Trangott Drennan (November 20, 1819 – 1882) was an Irish-born merchant and politician in Ontario, Canada. He served as mayor of Kingston in 1872. He was born in the Moravian settlement, County Tyrone, and left Ireland as a boy, moving to Scotland with his father. Drennan was educated in Scotland. In 1841, he came to Kingston, where he worked as a clerk in a dry goods store. Drennan next worked as a purser on a steamship. He then, with a partner, opened his own dry goods store; after the partnership was dissolved, he continued operating on his own. Drennan married Annie Boyd. He then became a furniture manufacturer. For a time, his furniture was being built by convicts at the Kingston Penitentiary. From 1873 to 1877 and from 1878 to 1879, he represented St. Lawrence ward on Kingston city council. Canada General Service Medal
The Canada General Service Medal was a campaign medal awarded by the Canadian Government to both Imperial and Canadian forces for duties related to the Fenian raids between 1866 and 1871. The medal was initially issued in 1899 and had to be applied for. The application period was later extended to 1907, then to 1928. With late applications, 17,623 medals were awarded, including 15,300 to members of Canadian units. The medal, in diameter, is silver and has a plain straight swivel suspender. The obverse bears the head of Queen Victoria with the legend VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX, while the reverse depicts the ensign of Canada surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves with the word CANADA above.The recipient's name, rank and unit appear on the rim of the medal.
