William Henry Chipman
William Henry Chipman (November 3, 1807 – April 10, 1870) was a Canadian politician and a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Kings in Nova Scotia. He was born at Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, the son of Reverend William Chipman and Mary Dickey, in Kings County. Early in his youth he was sent to Saint John, New Brunswick to learn business practices at the firm of Leverett DeVeber. He later worked as a merchant selling general merchandise, holding mortgages on large tracts of land, and loaning money to business ventures. In 1831, Chipman married Sophia Araminta Cogswell. He was elected to the 1st Canadian Parliament on September 20, 1867 as a member of the Anti-Confederation Party. At the anti-confederate convention of August 1868 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in opposition to Joseph Howe, he proposed that the best way of getting the Confederation repealed would be for all anti-confederate Members of Parliament to offer their resignations. The House of Commons of Canada (french: Chambre des communes du Canada) is the lower house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the Senate of Canada, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The House of Commons is a democratically elected body whose members are known as members of Parliament (MPs). There have been 338 MPs since the most recent electoral district redistribution for the 2015 federal election, which saw the addition of 30 seats. Leverett De Veber Chipman
Leverett de Veber Chipman (October 20, 1831 – January 8, 1914) was a Nova Scotia businessman and political figure. He represented Kings in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1870 to 1874. He was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1831, the son of William Henry Chipman and Sophia Araminta Cogswell. Chipman was educated at the Horton Academy and Acadia College. He entered business as a hardware merchant in Cornwallis. In 1853, he married Nancy Leonard Moore. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1870 after the death of his father, who had been elected in Kings in 1867. Chipman served as a lieutenant-colonel in the local militia. He was an agent for the Bank of Nova Scotia in Kentville. Smallpox
Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by variola virus (often called smallpox virus) which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus. The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977, and the World Health Organization (WHO) certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980, making it the only human disease to be eradicated. The initial symptoms of the disease included fever and vomiting. This was followed by formation of ulcers in the mouth and a skin rash. Over a number of days, the skin rash turned into the characteristic fluid-filled blisters with a dent in the center. The bumps then scabbed over and fell off, leaving scars. The disease was spread between people or via contaminated objects. Prevention was achieved mainly through the smallpox vaccine. Once the disease had developed, certain antiviral medication may have helped. The risk of death was about 30%, with higher rates among babies.
