Kings (electoral District)
Kings was a federal electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1925. It was created in the ''British North America Act'', 1867. The riding was abolished in 1924 when it was merged into Hants—Kings riding. It consisted of Kings County. Halifax (electoral District)
Halifax is a federal electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is one of a handful of ridings which has been represented continuously (albeit with different boundaries) in the House of Commons since Confederation in 1867. The riding of Halifax includes the communities of Spryfield, Sambro, Herring Cove, Harrietsfield, Williamswood, Prospect, Purcell's Cove, Armdale, Cowie Hill, Fairmount, Kline Heights, and the Halifax Peninsula. History The electoral district was created at Confederation in 1867. It returned two members until 1968. The most notable of the riding's MPs was Robert Borden, who was Conservative leader from 1901–1920, and Prime Minister of Canada from 1911-1920. Library Of Parliament
The Library of Parliament (french: Bibliothèque du Parlement) is the main information repository and research resource for the Parliament of Canada. The main branch of the library sits at the rear of the Centre Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario. The library survived the Centre Block#Great fire, 1916 fire that destroyed Centre Block. The library has been augmented and renovated several times since its construction in 1876, the last between 2002 and 2006, though the form and decor remain essentially authentic. Past Canadian Electoral Districts
This is a list of past arrangements of Canada's electoral districts. Each district sends one member to the House of Commons of Canada. In 1999 and 2003, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario was elected using the same districts within that province. 96 of Ontario's 107 provincial electoral districts, roughly those outside Northern Ontario, remain coterminous with their federal counterparts. This is a list of Canada's 338 federal electoral districts (commonly referred to as '' ridings'' in Canadian English) as defined by the ''2013 Representation Order''. Ernest William Robinson
Ernest William Robinson (18 May 1875 – 4 February 1952) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in Lakeville, Nova Scotia and became a principal and teacher. The son of William Henry Robinson and Eliza Rouse, he was educated at Acadia University. In 1901, he married Alice Wood. Robinson was principal of Acadia Collegiate Academy and also served as Inspector of Schools in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. He was elected to Parliament at the Kings riding in the 1921 general election. Arthur De Witt Foster
Arthur DeWitt Foster (May 17, 1886 – March 2, 1939) was an educator, broker and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Kings from 1911 to 1915 and Hants—Kings from 1925 to 1926 in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative. He was born in Hampton, Nova Scotia, the son of Aron Judson Foster and Eunice Lavinia Chuter, and was educated at the Provincial Normal School and Acadia University. In 1912, he married Charlotte Lawrence. Foster taught school in Wolfville and Kentville. He resigned his seat in the House of Commons in 1915. From 1916 to 1924, he was Superintendent of the Colonization Department, Canadian National Railway. Frederick William Borden
Sir Frederick William Borden, (May 14, 1847 – January 6, 1917) was a Canadian politician. While he was the Minister for Militia and Defence, he was the father of the most famous Canadian casualty of the Second Boer War Harold Lothrop Borden. Historians credit him with creating and financing a modernised Canadian militia with a staff and medical, transport, and signals that proved important for allowing Canadian ground forces to deploy with their own support services as self-contained national contingents, albeit in an imperial framework. Leverett De Veber Chipman
Leverett de Veber Chipman (October 20, 1831 – January 8, 1914) was a Nova Scotia businessman and political figure. He represented Kings in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal member from 1870 to 1874. He was born in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1831, the son of William Henry Chipman and Sophia Araminta Cogswell. Chipman was educated at the Horton Academy and Acadia College. He entered business as a hardware merchant in Cornwallis. In 1853, he married Nancy Leonard Moore. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1870 after the death of his father, who had been elected in Kings in 1867. Chipman served as a lieutenant-colonel in the local militia. William Henry Chipman
William Henry Chipman (November 3, 1807 – April 10, 1870) was a Canadian politician and a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Kings in Nova Scotia. He was born at Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, the son of Reverend William Chipman and Mary Dickey, in Kings County. Early in his youth he was sent to Saint John, New Brunswick to learn business practices at the firm of Leverett DeVeber. He later worked as a merchant selling general merchandise, holding mortgages on large tracts of land, and loaning money to business ventures. In 1831, Chipman married Sophia Araminta Cogswell. He was elected to the 1st Canadian Parliament on September 20, 1867 as a member of the Anti-Confederation Party.
