William Dumaresq Wright
William Dumaresq Wright (c.1833 - 5 August 1886) was a Ceylonese civil servant, the 14th Treasurer of Ceylon (1882-1886) and the third Mayor of Colombo (1884-1886). William Dumaresq Wright was born c.1833 in Colombo, the eldest son of Henry Wright, the Accountant General and Controller of Revenue of Ceylon (1841–1847) and Camilla née Lowe, the daughter of Sir Hudson Lowe. Wright entered the Ceylon Civil Service in 1853, was the Government Agent for the North Western Province between 1871 and 1873, the Principal Collector of Customs 1873 to 1881, the Treasurer of Ceylon from February 1882 and the Mayor of Colombo from 22 June 1884, until his death in 1886. He married Amy Delatre Braybrooke (1833-1921) on 4 July 1857, the youngest daughter of Colonel Samuel Baybrooke, in Colombo. The Financial Secretary of Ceylon was an officer of the Ceylonese Government and member of the Board of Ministers. The Treasurer of Ceylon was one of six offices that held a seat in the Executive Council of Ceylon from 1809 to 1932. The post was replaced by the that of Financial Secretary in 1932, as one of three officers of state of the new Board of Ministers that replaced the Executive Council under recommendations of the Donoughmore Commission. George Thomas Michael O'Brien
Sir George Thomas Michael O'Brien ( Chinese: 柯布連) (5 November 1844 – 12 April 1906) was a British colonial official who served as Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong from 1892 to 1895, and as Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific from 1897 to June 1901. Career O'Brien was the 19th Accountant General and Controller of Revenue of British Ceylon. He was appointed on 18 October 1890, succeeding W. H. Ravenscroft, and held the office until 31 July 1891. He was succeeded by J. A. Swettenham. He also served as Treasurer of Ceylon from 1886 to 1890. He became Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong in 1892, a position he held until 1895. In 1897, he succeeded John Thurston as Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific. He was recalled in June 1901 following a conflict with the New Zealand Government led by Richard Seddon regarding a proposed Federation of Fiji and New Zealand. He died in 1906. George Vane
George Vane CMG, CCS, was the thirteenth Treasurer of Ceylon (1865-1882), and a member of both the Legislative Council and Governor's Executive Council, under the Robinson, Gregory and Longden administrations. Career Vane was initially appointed to the custom's department in Liverpool in 1834, before being appointed as inspector general of imports and exports in London in 1837, then landing waiter in 1839. In 1847 he was made comptroller of customs in Jaffna, British Ceylon. In 1854 he was the deputy collector of customs in the western and north-western province of Ceylon. Vane served as superintendent of fisheries from 1855 to 1860 and was primarily responsible for administering pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mannar, during that time. A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a head of state (including the Pope) or representative for service to the monarch, the church or the country, especially in a military capacity. Mayor Of Colombo
The Mayor of Colombo is the Mayor (and head) of the Colombo Municipal Council. The post was created in 1866 when the Colombo Municipal Council was established by the Legislative Council of Ceylon. The Mayor is assisted by the Deputy Mayor and a Municipal Commissioner. Since 1944 the majority of the mayors have been from the United National Party.
