George Vane
George Vane CMG, CCS, was the thirteenth Treasurer of Ceylon (1865-1882), and a member of both the Legislative Council and Governor's Executive Council, under the Robinson, Gregory and Longden administrations. Career Vane was initially appointed to the custom's department in Liverpool in 1834, before being appointed as inspector general of imports and exports in London in 1837, then landing waiter in 1839. In 1847 he was made comptroller of customs in Jaffna, British Ceylon. In 1854 he was the deputy collector of customs in the western and north-western province of Ceylon. Vane served as superintendent of fisheries from 1855 to 1860 and was primarily responsible for administering pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mannar, during that time. In 1887 a report he prepared on the Ceylon pearl fisheries was published by the Royal Asiatic Society. In 1861 he was appointed the principal collector of customs in Ceylon. The governor of Ceylon was the representative in Ceylon of the British Crown from 1795 to 1948. In this capacity, the governor was president of the Executive Council and Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in Ceylon. The governor was the head of the British colonial administration in Ceylon, reporting to the Colonial Office. With Ceylon gaining self-rule and dominion status with the creation of Dominion of Ceylon in 1948, this office was replaced by the Governor-General, who represented the British monarch as the head of state. Augustus Hill (British Army Officer)
Brigadier-General Augustus West Hill, (4 May 1853 – 2 January 1921) was a British Army officer. Military career Hill was commissioned into the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot on 1 January 1873. Following the 1881 Childers Reforms, the 57th merged with the 77th (East Middlesex), and became 2nd Battalion, the Middlesex Regiment; Hill commanded the battalion at the Battle of Spion Kop in January 1900, during the Second Boer War. He was subsequently mentioned in dispatches and appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath for this action. He became General Officer Commanding the Welsh Division in August 1908, shortly before retiring in January 1909. He lived at Beckington Castle in Somerset from 1896 until 1901. The Postmaster General of Sri Lanka is the appointed head of Sri Lanka Post, which is a government department. The current Postmaster General is Ranjith Ariyaratne. History The first mail service in Ceylon, was in 1788, established by the Dutch East India Company between Holland and Batavia via the Cape of Good Hope and Dutch Ceylon. They established postal offices in the coastal trading centres of Colombo, Galle, Jaffna and Mannar. In 1795 the Dutch were expelled by the British and the Maritime Provinces were initially administered by the British East India Company. Two years later Ceylon became a Crown Colony. Imperial Service Order
The Imperial Service Order was established by King Edward VII in August 1902. It was awarded on retirement to the administration and clerical staff of the Civil Service throughout the British Empire for long and meritorious service. Normally a person must have served for 25 years to become eligible, but this might be shortened to 16 years for those serving in unhealthy climates abroad. There is one class: Companion. Both men and women are eligible, and recipients of this order are entitled to use the post-nominal letters 'ISO'.
