Wijnendale is a village located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. It belongs to the municipality of Torhout. Wijnendale is situated at 4 km from the city center of Torhout, halfway in between this city center and Ichtegem. The village used to belong to the municipality of Ichtegem, but was moved to the municipality of Torhout in the 1970s. Wijnendale is situated on a plateau 40 metres above sea level, some 20 metres higher than the surrounding countryside. Wijnendale Castle
Wijnendale Castle ( French: Château de Wynendaele, nl, Kasteel van Wijnendale) is a historic residence in Wijnendale, West Flanders in Belgium which was once a medieval castle. The present buildings largely date to a nineteenth century restoration, though parts of the north wing still date to the fifteenth century. One wing is currently inhabited by the present owners of the castle, while another is open to the public as a museum. The Battle of Wijnendale was a battle in the War of the Spanish Succession fought on 28 September 1708 near Wijnendale, Flanders, between an allied force protecting a convoy carrying ammunition for the Siege of Lille (1708) and forces of Bourbon France and Spain. It ended in a victory for the allies, leading to the taking of Lille. Prelude After their great victory in the Battle of Oudenaarde (11 July 1708), Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy decided to besiege Lille. But Lille was very well defended by modern fortifications designed by Vauban and a garrison of 16,000 men. The allied siege didn't go as well as planned and a lack of ammunition was imminent. To make things worse, the supply lines from the east were cut by the French, so the only remaining line of supply was by ship from England to the port of Ostend, some 75 km from Lille. Torhout (; french: Thourout; vls, Toeroet) is a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. Ichtegem
Ichtegem () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders 15 km southwest of Bruges. The municipality comprises the towns of Bekegem, Eernegem and Ichtegem proper. On January 1, 2006 Ichtegem had a total population of 13,423. The total area is 45.33 km² which gives a population density of 296 inhabitants per km². The current mayor is Karl Bonny. In 2006, Ichtegem was declared the official ''Dorp van de Ronde'' (Town of the Tour) for the 90th annual road cycling race the Tour of Flanders.
