West Virginia Route 27
West Virginia Route 27 is an east–west state highway located within the Northern Panhandle county of Brooke in West Virginia. The western terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 2 in Wellsburg. The eastern terminus is at the Pennsylvania state line five miles (8 km) east of Wellsburg, where WV 27 continues east into the border town of Independence as Pennsylvania Route 844. Wellsburg, West Virginia
Wellsburg is a city in and the county seat of Brooke County, West Virginia, United States. The 2020 census recorded a population of 2,455. It is a part of the Weirton–Steubenville metropolitan area. The city's economy includes several telemarketing facilities, and a factory that does metal fabrication and plastics molding. History The town was laid out in 1790, and its post office was opened on September 1, 1870. In 1772, the Cox brothers, Friend, Israel, and Jonathan, made tomahawk rights claims totaling in the area now including Wellsburg. In March 1788, Charles Prather purchased from the Cox heirs for $3,000. In 1791, Prather petitioned Ohio County to incorporate the town of Charlestown, Virginia, naming it after himself. The original name continued until 1816, when it was changed to Wellsburg, to avoid confusion with Charles Town, Jefferson County. Brooke County, West Virginia
Brooke County is a county in the Northern Panhandle of the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 22,559. Its county seat is Wellsburg. The county was created in 1797 from part of Ohio County and named in honor of Robert Brooke, Governor of Virginia from 1794 to 1796. Brooke County is part of the Weirton-Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton, PA-WV-OH Combined Statistical Area. Northern Panhandle
The Northern Panhandle is the northern of the two panhandles in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is a culturally and geographically distinct region of the state. It is the state's northernmost extension, bounded by Ohio and the Ohio River on the north and west and the state of Pennsylvania on the east. Its unusual configuration is the result of the Revolutionary-era claims of Virginia's former Yohogania County boundary lying along the Ohio River, conflicting with interpretations of the Colony of Pennsylvania's royal charter. West Virginia Route 2
West Virginia Route 2 is a state highway in the US state of West Virginia. It generally parallels the Ohio River along the western border of the state, from U.S. Route 60 in Huntington (just west of the East End Bridge) northeasterly to U.S. Route 30 in Chester (just south of the Jennings Randolph Memorial Bridge). WV 2 leaves the shores of the Ohio River in two places: between Point Pleasant and Mount Alto (where West Virginia Route 62 follows the river) and between Ravenswood and Waverly (where West Virginia Route 68 mostly follows the river). Pennsylvania Route 844 (PA 844) is a state highway located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The western terminus is the West Virginia state line in Independence Township where the road becomes West Virginia Route 27 (WV 27). The eastern terminus is at PA 18 in Washington. PA 844 is a two-lane undivided road that passes through rural areas in western Washington County, serving West Middletown. Along the way, the route intersects PA 50 and PA 231 in Independence Township and PA 331 in Canton Township. The road between West Middletown and Washington became a private turnpike called the Washington and West Middletown Turnpike in 1852.
