West Of Scotland District (rugby Union)
West of Scotland District is a select provincial amateur rugby union team that draws its players from the West of Scotland. Founded in 1876, the West of Scotland District team - and its corresponding East of Scotland District team - was created, thus halving Scotland's representative rugby union area in two. This was meant as an impetus to include players from beyond the original Glasgow District and Edinburgh District catchment areas. The West of Scotland District versus the East of Scotland District became the de facto trial match for the Scotland international team. It survives today, but only for age-grade. James Bishop (27 December 1867 – 15 January 1938) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career Bishop played rugby union for Glasgow Academicals. Provincial career He played for Glasgow District against Edinburgh District in the inter-city match of 17 December 1892. Bishop was then capped for Cities District in their match against Anglo-Scots on 24 December 1892. In Edinburgh circles his selection for this combined Glasgow-Edinburgh side caused quite a stir as they favoured their own players. The ''Scottish Referee'' newspaper had this advice: If J.M. John Kennedy Tod
John Kennedy Tod (11 September 1852 – 2 June 1925) was a Scottish-American merchant banker. In his youth he was a Scottish rugby union international who represented Scotland in the 1873–74 Home Nations rugby union matches and 1874–75 Home Nations rugby union matches. Tod was born on 11 September 1852 in Glasgow, Scotland and later moved to America where he attended Princeton University. Thomas Chalmers (19 March 1850 – 25 May 1926) was a Scottish international rugby and cricket player.Bath, Richard (ed.) Alexander Woodrow
Alexander Woodrow (13 November 1867 – 26 February 1916) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career He went to Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh. The ''Athletic News'' newspaper called the school 'one the finest - if not the finest - football nurseries in Scotland' and that Woodrow's rugby union ability was 'bred and reared' there. James Stewart Carrick
James Stewart Carrick (4 September 1855 – 2 January 1923) was a Scottish rugby union and cricket player. He died in Seattle, Washington in 1923. Carrick was a genuine all-round sportsman, playing international rugby as a full-back for , and appeared in a few important cricket matches. He was clearly a highly accomplished player, the only batsman to take a century off Nottinghamshire CCC between 1887 and 1890 when they dominated county cricket. William Frederick Holms (27 August 1866 – 30 September 1950) was a British civil engineer and Scotland international rugby union player. He was the son of James and Annie Holms and was also a nephew of Liberal politicians, John Holms (MP for Hackney) and Col. William Holms (MP for Paisley). Robert Greig (rugby Union)
Robert Greig (30 May 1871 – 10 January 1951) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby union career Amateur career Greig played with Glasgow Academicals. He was playing with the club from 1889. The club had a Spring Meeting festival day in 1891. As part of that, there was a drop kick tournament to see how far the contenders could drop kick a goal. Greig won the tournament by drop kicking from 61 yards out, though it was aided by the wind.
