William Holms (rugby Union)
William Frederick Holms (27 August 1866 – 30 September 1950) was a British civil engineer and Scotland international rugby union player. He was the son of James and Annie Holms and was also a nephew of Liberal politicians, John Holms (MP for Hackney) and Col. William Holms (MP for Paisley). Rugby union career Amateur career Holms started his rugby union career playing for Blairlodge School. He was captain of the side in 1884. He was picked for Scotland and noted as a Blair Lodge player initially for the Ireland match in February 1886 – but by the time the match came around he was already snapped up by London Scottish and was previously listed as a London Scottish player in the Wales match in January 1886. However he was noted as being unable to play and his place went to Alexander Stephen of West of Scotland. He played for London Scottish in March 1886 and December 1886 and March 1887. Govan
Govan ( ; Cumbric?: ''Gwovan'?''; Scots: ''Gouan''; Scottish Gaelic: ''Baile a' Ghobhainn'') is a district, parish, and former burgh now part of south-west City of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated west of Glasgow city centre, on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark. In the early medieval period, the site of the present Govan Old churchyard was established as a Christian centre for the Brittonic Kingdom of Alt Clut (Dumbarton Rock) and its successor realm, the Kingdom of Strathclyde. Companion Of The Order Of The Indian Empire
The Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire is an order of chivalry founded by Queen Victoria on 1 January 1878. The Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit officers for the services which cater to the technical functions of the Government of India. It is a three-stage competitive examination comprising objective, subjective and personality tests. The Grange Club
The Grange Club is a cricket and sports club in the Stockbridge district of Edinburgh, Scotland. The cricket ground, commonly known as The Grange, is the regular home of the Scotland national cricket team, and is situated adjacent to the Edinburgh Academy sports ground, which is in Raeburn Place. History The Grange Club was founded in 1832, in The Grange district of Edinburgh. In 1872 it moved to its current location at Raeburn Place in the Stockbridge district and has hosted out of its pavilion since 1894. The pavilion cost £1,400 and was officially opened on 29 June 1895 by Lord Moncrieff. The pavilion was restored in 1998 at a cost of £450,000. Henry James Stevenson (12 July 1867 – 8 August 1945) was a Scotland international rugby union player. He played at Full back. He also played first-class cricket. Andrew Ramsay "Bunny" Don-Wauchope (29 April 1861 – 16 January 1948) was a Scottish international rugby union back who played club rugby for Cambridge and Fettesian-Lorettonian. Don Wauchope played an important role within the early growth of Scottish rugby and after retiring from international rugby he became a referee and was the President of the Scottish Rugby Union. He was considered Scotland's outstanding half-back of the early 1880sGriffiths (1987), 2:5. and is credited as being one of the pioneers of modern half-back play. Leslie Balfour-Melville
Leslie Balfour-Melville (9 March 1854 – 17 July 1937), born Leslie Balfour, was a Scottish amateur sportsman, serving as captain, opening batsman, and wicket-keeper for the Scotland national cricket team. Balfour-Melville was also an international rugby union player, tennis player, ice skater, curler, long-jumper, and player of English billiards. He was a prolific golf medal winner, winning The Amateur Championship, at St Andrews in 1895. He also held several administrative positions within national governing bodies. Walter Bettesworth
Walter Ambrose Bettesworth (24 November 1856 – 23 February 1929) was an English cricketer and cricket writer. Bettesworth was educated at Ardingly College in Sussex. A hard-hitting batsman, slow round-arm bowler and energetic field at cover point, he played 21 first-class matches for Sussex between 1878 and 1883. He also played once for Scotland in 1884 against the Philadelphians. His highest first-class score was 77, the highest score on either side in the match, when Sussex defeated Hampshire in 1881. His best bowling figures were 5 for 66 in Sussex's loss to Yorkshire later that season, when he also made 32 and 59, Sussex's top score. After finishing at Ardingly as a pupil Bettesworth returned there to teach, then taught at Blair College in Scotland. Later he became a journalist and one of the best-known writers on the game.
