West Footscray Football Club
The West Footscray Football Club is an Australian rules football club that is based at Kevin Shorten Reserve in West Footscray. The club entered the Footscray District Football League in 1932 and won a premiership in 1934 and again in 1935. West Footscray have won five premierships; four in Division 1 and, most recently, the 2007 Division 2 premiership. The club has 2 senior Men's Teams, a Women's Team (Founded in 2018) and 9 junior teams, including under 15 and 12s girls teams, as well as Auskick junior development. Western Region Football League
The Western Region Football League is an Australian rules football semi-professional league, based in the western suburbs of Melbourne, for both seniors and juniors. History The league was formed in 1931 as the "Footscray District Football League". During the 1950s, the VFL club Footscray was financially backing the competition, so they decided to bar clubs that were inside the zone. This resulted in six clubs leaving. More changes occurred in 1952 as the league decided that clubs had to provide an under-18 competition; this action reduced the club numbers down to twelve. The next initiative was the introduction of an under-16 competition in 1954. In 1988, the league absorbed clubs from the West Suburban Football League; and, in 2000, to reflect the fact that the league had expanded across the western suburbs, it changed its name to the Western Region Football League. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Auskick
Auskick is a program designed to teach the basic skills of Australian rules football (AFL) to boys and girls aged between 5 and 12. Auskick is a non-contact variant of the sport. It began in Australia and is now a nationwide non-selective program. It has increased participation and diversity in the sport amongst children, and is now being run in many countries across the world. Marty McDonnell
Martin Joseph McDonnell (28 December 1920 – 22 December 2005) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He was born in New Zealand. Recruited from West Footscray, McDonnell was a defender, used often at full-back. He was only a regular in the team after the war, having missed the entire 1942, 1943 and 1945 seasons due to service in the Pacific War. From 1947 to 1949, McDonnell missed just three games and he received the equal most votes by a Footscray player in the 1947 Brownlow Medal count. He represented the VFL eight times during his career. He retired after the 1950 season and applied for the job of Footscray coach but after missing out joined Yarrawonga and coached them in the Ovens & Murray Football League, until 1954. Western Bulldogs
The Western Bulldogs are a professional Australian rules football team that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Laurie Sandilands
Laurie Sandilands (born 30 April 1949) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray in the Victorian Football League The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It ... (VFL). He made his senior debut in 1966, after being recruited from a local Footscray District Football League club, the West Footscray Roosters. He played briefly in Footscray's Under 19's squad, before making his senior debut. Sandilands was a key position forward and topped Footscray's goalkicking every season from 1972 to 1975. His best season tally was 50 goals which he kicked in 1974. Sandilands also captained the club that season and he remained in charge for a further two seasons.
