Western Region Football League
The Western Region Football League is an Australian rules football semi-professional league, based in the western suburbs of Melbourne, for both seniors and juniors. History The league was formed in 1931 as the "Footscray District Football League". During the 1950s, the VFL club Footscray was financially backing the competition, so they decided to bar clubs that were inside the zone. This resulted in six clubs leaving. More changes occurred in 1952 as the league decided that clubs had to provide an under-18 competition; this action reduced the club numbers down to twelve. The next initiative was the introduction of an under-16 competition in 1954. In 1988, the league absorbed clubs from the West Suburban Football League; and, in 2000, to reflect the fact that the league had expanded across the western suburbs, it changed its name to the Western Region Football League. The Hoppers Crossing Football Club is an Australian rules football club which compete in the WRFL since 1988. They are based in the Melbourne suburb of Hoppers Crossing. History In 1972, the club fielded a senior team in the Western Suburbs FL. In 1981 and 1987 they made the Grand final only to lose both games. They moved across to the Footscray and District FL in 1988 after their previous league closed down. After winning the 1992 Division 2 premiership the club was promoted to Division One where they have remained since. The Albion Football Club is an Australian rules football club which has competed in the Western Region Football League (WRFL) since 1961. They are based in the Melbourne suburb of Albion. History When Sunshine FC were admitted to the VFA in 1959, the club decided not to support a third open age team in the FDFL. The players from this Sunshine thirds were worried about getting a game by the 1961 season. The Yarraville Oval is an Australian rules football and cricket ground located on the corner of Williamstown Road and Anderson Street in Yarraville, Victoria. It is currently the home ground of the Yarraville Football Club, Yarraville/Seddon Eagles Football Club and the Yarraville Cricket Club. The ground was most notable as the home of the Yarraville Football Club throughout almost its entire existence in both the Victorian Junior Football Association from 1903 until 1927, and then in the Victorian Football Association from 1928 until 1982; the club played its games at the Western Oval in its final season 1983 VFA season, in 1983.
