Werner Schmieder
Werner Schmieder (born 11 November 1926) is a former politician who served as the minister of finance in East Germany in the period 1980–1981. Biography Schmieder was born in Possendorf, today Bannewitz, on 11 November 1926. He received a degree in economy and in 1967 he also obtained PhD in road engineering. Between 1949 and 1955 he worked at Investbank in Dresden. In 1955 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party. He was the head of the Investbank in Cottbus from 1955 to 1962. He served as the deputy minister of finance (1967–1974) and state secretary (1974–1980). Schmieder was appointed minister of finance in July 1980 succeeding Siegfried Böhm in the post. Willi Stoph
Wilhelm Stoph (9 July 1914 – 13 April 1999) was a German politician. He served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister) of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1964 to 1973, and again from 1976 until 1989. He also served as chairman of the State Council (head of state) from 1973 to 1976. Biography Stoph was born in Berlin in 1914; his father died the following year in World War I. In 1928, Stoph joined the Communist Youth League of Germany (Kommunistischer Jugendverband Deutschlands; KJVD) and in 1931 he joined the Communist Party of Germany. He was conscripted into the Wehrmacht from 1935 to 1937, and served during World War II from 1940 to 1945. He was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class and rose to the rank of Unteroffizier. Siegfried Böhm
Siegfried Böhm (20 August 1928–4 May 1980) was an East German politician and long-term finance minister of East Germany. He was in office for nearly fourteen years between 1966 and 1980. Biography Böhm was born in Plauen on 20 August 1928. In 1966 he was appointed the finance minister and his term lasted until 1980. He was among the central committee members of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany. He was also a member of the Working Group Balance of Payments from 1974 to 1980. Böhm was one of the first officials who alerted the East German authorities about the negative consequences of the indebtedness to the Western countries. He also criticized the illegal currency and gold transactions carried out in the country. Böhm died at his home in Berlin-Karlshorst on 4 May 1980. Ernst Höfner (1 October 1929 – 24 November 2009) was Finance Minister of the East Germany, German Democratic Republic. Born in Berlin, Höfner graduated with a degree in business. In the 1960s, he was a secretary in the finance ministry. From 1970 to 1976 he was deputy minister of finance. From 1976 to 1979 he was first secretary of Socialist Unity Party of Germany, SED's department for central bank and financial organs. And from 1979 to 1981 he was also first secretary of the national planning commission. From 1981 to 1989, after succeeding Werner Schmieder, he served as Finance Minister.
