Welsh Liberal Party
The Welsh Liberal Party was the section of the Liberal Party operating in Wales. From the 1860s until the First World War, a close relationship developed between particular issues relevant to Welsh politics and the Liberal Party. These included land reform, temperance, the expansion and reform of elementary education and, most prominently, the disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales. In the decade after 1886, there emerged another issue in the form of Home Rule as espoused by the Cymru Fydd movement but, for some within the Liberal Party in Wales this was a step too far and it came close to breaking the party. William John Gruffydd
William John Gruffydd (14 February 1881 – 29 September 1954) was a Welsh scholar, poet, writer and editor, and the last Member of Parliament to represent the University of Wales seat. Gruffydd was elected to Parliament as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for the University of Wales seat on 29 January 1943 after the sitting MP Ernest Evans became a County Court Judge. Gruffydd's opponent in the by-election was Plaid's Saunders Lewis, and he had effectively split the Welsh-speaking community. He was comfortably re-elected in the 1945 general election and sat until the abolition of university seats in 1950. He did not stand again for Parliament. Herbert Lewis
Sir John Herbert Lewis (27 December 1858 – 10 November 1933) was a Welsh Liberal politician. Background and education Born at Mostyn Quay, Flintshire, Lewis was the only child of Enoch Lewis and Catherine Roberts. It is possible that Lewis was related to C.S. Lewis. This speculation is the result of the fact that C.S. Lewis's grandfather, Richard Lewis, was born in Flintshire in 1775. He was educated at McGill University and Exeter College, Oxford. Political career Lewis was the first Chairman of Flintshire County Council. He was Member of Parliament MP for Flint Boroughs 1892–1906. In 1894, he resigned the Liberal Whip in the so-called 'Welsh Revolt', joining David Alfred Thomas, David Lloyd George and Frank Edwards. In a letter to T. E. Evan Spicer
Sir Evan Spicer (20 April 1849 – 22 December 1937) was a British Liberal and London Progressive politician who served for 30 years on the London County Council. Background Spicer was the son of James Spicer. He was educated at Mill Hill School. In 1873 he married Annie Whitley. They had four sons and two daughters. Thomas Gee
Thomas Gee (24 January 181528 September 1898), was a Welsh Nonconformist preacher, journalist and publisher. Gee was born in Denbigh, Wales. At the age of fourteen he went into his father's printing office, Gwasg Gee, but continued to attend the grammar school in the afternoons. In 1837 he went to London to improve his knowledge of printing, and on his return to Wales in the following year, he threw himself into literary, educational and religious work. Among his publications were the well-known quarterly magazine ''Y Traethodydd'' ("The Essayist"), '' Y Gwyddoniadur Cymreig'' ("Encyclopaedia Cambrensis"), and Dr. Silvan Evans; ''English-Welsh Dictionary'' (1868), but his greatest achievement in this field was the newspaper ''Baner Cymru'' ("The Banner of Wales"), founded in 1857 and amalgamated with ''Yr Amserau'' ("The Times") two years later as ''Baner ac Amserau Cymru''. Winston Roddick
George Winston Roddick, (born 2 October 1940 in Caernarfon) is a Welsh barrister, and the former North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner. At the time he was a member of the Liberal Democrats, but ran as an independent and on election resigned from the Party. Roddick was the first person to hold the post. Early life Roddick was born and raised in Caernarfon, educated at the Royal Naval School Tal-Handaq, Malta and the Sir Hugh Owen Grammar School, Caernarfon. Alexander Charles Carlile, Baron Carlile of Berriew, (born 12 February 1948) is a British barrister and crossbench member of the House of Lords. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Montgomeryshire from 1983 to 1997. Early life and career Alex Carlile, the son of Polish Jewish immigrants, was born in Ruabon, North Wales and brought up in Lancashire. Martin Thomas, Baron Thomas Of Gresford
Donald Martin Thomas, Baron Thomas of Gresford, (born 13 March 1937) is a British Liberal Democrat politician. Born the son of a Llangollen policeman, he was educated at Grove Park Grammar School, Wrexham, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge, he graduated with an LLB in Law and an MA in Classics. He practised as a solicitor in Wrexham from 1961 to 1966 before becoming a lecturer in law. He was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1967, and was appointed a QC in 1979. He became a deputy circuit judge in 1974, a Crown Court Recorder in 1976, and a Deputy High Court judge in 1995. Having been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1982 Birthday Honours, Thomas was created a Life Peer as Baron Thomas of Gresford, of Gresford in the County Borough of Wrexham on 30 September 1996, whereupon he took the Liberal Democrat Whip. Alun Talfan Davies
Sir Alun Talfan Davies (22 July 1913 – 11 November 2000) was a Welsh judge, publisher and Liberal politician. Background Alun Talfan Davies was born at Gorseinon near Swansea, the youngest son of the Calvinistic Methodist minister William Talfan Davies (1873–1938) and his wife Alys, née Jones (1878–1948). He was the brother of Aneirin Talfan Davies. He was educated at Gowerton grammar school. He read law at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1942, he married Eiluned Christopher Williams. He had one son and three daughters. In 1969 his daughter Janet married the Welsh Rugby international Barry John. Glyn Tegai Hughes (18 January 1923 – 10 March 2017) was a Welsh scholar, writer and literary critic. He was a Liberal Party politician and Welsh nationalist. John Hinds (politician)
John Hinds (26 July 1862 – 23 July 1928) was a Welsh businessman and politician. At the December 1910 general election Hinds was chosen as the Liberal candidate for the seat of West Carmarthenshire, holding the seat until its abolition in 1918. Early life Hinds was born at Cwnin Farm near Carmarthen. He was the son of William Hinds and Mary ''née'' Jones. He was apprenticed as a draper to his uncle who had a business in Carmarthen Town. In 1887 he moved to Blackheath in the south eastern suburbs of London where he founded the highly successful drapery firm of Hinds and Company. At various times he held the offices of chairman of the Drapers’ Fire Insurance Corporation and president of the Drapers’ Chamber of Trade. John Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids
John Wynford Philipps, 1st Viscount St Davids , (30 May 1860 – 28 March 1938) was a British Liberal politician. Background and education Philipps was the eldest son of Reverend Sir James Erasmus Philipps, 12th Baronet, Vicar of Warminster and Prebendary of Salisbury. He was the elder brother of Ivor Philipps and Owen Philipps, 1st Baron Kylsant, both also MPs, and of Laurence Philipps, 1st Baron Milford. A fifth brother, Bertram, was the last private owner of Philipps House in Wiltshire. Philipps was educated at Felsted School and at Keble College, Oxford, where he took a third-class honours degree in modern history in 1882.
