Wells Fargo Center (Denver)
Wells Fargo Center is a skyscraper located in Denver, Colorado, United States. The building is also known by its former name One Norwest Center. It is known colloquially as the Cash Register Building for the way its uppermost floors curve together resembling the shape of an antique cash register. At 52 stories tall, it is high and the third tallest building in Denver. It is shorter than the Republic Plaza building at , and 1801 California Street at . The building was designed by architect Philip Johnson, under a master plan by I. M. Pei, and was completed in 1983. As it was originally designed to be for a downtown area in Texas, a heated roof is necessary to prevent snow from accumulating and sliding dangerously off the curved crown. Philip Cortelyou Johnson (July 8, 1906 – January 25, 2005) was an American architect best known for his works of modern and postmodern architecture. Republic Plaza is a skyscraper in Denver, Colorado. Rising 717 feet (219 m), the building currently stands as the tallest building in the city of Denver and the entire Rocky Mountain region of the United States. It was built in 1984, and contains 56 floors, the majority of which are used as office space. Republic Plaza currently stands as the 137th-tallest building in the United States. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and built of reinforced concrete clad in Sardinian granite, Republic Plaza includes of office space, and three retail levels containing shops, restaurants, and service businesses. 1801 California Street is a skyscraper in Denver, Colorado. The building was completed in 1983, and rises 53 floors and in height. The building stands as the second-tallest building in Denver and Colorado, and as the 151st-tallest building in the United States. 1801 California Street was previously occupied by offices for US West, and then served as the world headquarters of Qwest Communications. In summer 2011 following CenturyLink's acquisition of Qwest, the Qwest sign was removed from the top and replaced with the CenturyLink sign. Upon its completion in 1983, the building stood as the tallest building in the city. However, it held that distinction for less than a year, being surpassed by Republic Plaza in 1984.
