Charles Weidman
Charles Weidman (July 22, 1901 – July 15, 1975) was a renowned choreographer, modern dancer and teacher. He is well known as one of the pioneers of modern dance in America. He wanted to break free from the traditional movements of dance forms popular at the time to create a uniquely American style of movement. Born in 1901, he choreographed from the 1920s until his death in 1975. While he is most famous for his work with Doris Humphrey, Weidman did much work on his own. He created a bridge to a new range of movement that he only began to explore. His work inspired many and helped to create a whole genre of dance that is still evolving today. Career Charles Weidman began choreographing in a time of great change in American culture. He began his career as a dancer for the Denishawn Company, but soon decided to break free from their exotic style of movement and create a new style that was unique to America. Jerome Weidman (April 4, 1913, New York City – October 6, 1998, New York City) was an American playwright and novelist. He collaborated with George Abbott on the book for the musical ''Fiorello!'' with music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. All received the 1960 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work. Biography Weidman was born in Manhattan, New York City, and moved with his family to The Bronx after finishing high school at DeWitt Clinton. His parents were Jewish immigrants and his father Joseph worked in the garment trade. Weidman is an unincorporated community in Isabella County, Michigan, United States. It is a census-designated place (CDP) for statistical purposes, but has no independent municipal authority. The population of the CDP was 959 at the 2010 census, up from 879 at the 2000 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which are land and , or 4.98%, are water. The built-up center of town is in the southern part of the CDP, on the south side of Lake of the Hills on the Coldwater River. The Coldwater is a south-flowing tributary of the Chippewa River and thus part of the Saginaw River drainage basin. Weidman is by road northwest of Mount Pleasant, the Isabella County seat, and southwest of Clare. The community is situated on the boundary between Nottawa Township on the east and Sherman Township on the west.
