The Wegelius family is originally from the county of Ilmajoki in Ostrobothnia, the family's forefather is considered to be Jakob Eriksson Uppa who was the master of the Seinäjoki-based Uppala house in the early 17th century. The Wegelius family consists of many famous individual political figures, bankers, engineers, musicians and sportsmen. The family name Wegelius derives from the name of the Finnish city Seinäjoki. Literally translated to Swedish, Seinäjoki is vägg-älv, or wegg-elf in former Swedish spelling, in Latin form Wegelius. Charly Wegelius
Charles "Charly" Wegelius (born 26 April 1978 in Espoo, Finland) is a British former professional road racing cyclist. Never a winner of a professional race individually, Wegelius nevertheless made a career out of being a reliable and strong domestique, most notably in the mountains. Career Early career Wegelius started his career in France, riding for the Vendée U team managed by Jean-René Bernaudeau, thanks to the influence of former pro Graham Jones. His team-mates included Walter Bénéteau, Christian Guiberteau, Roger Hammond, Samuel Plouhinec, and Janek Tombak. He won a number of races in his first season, including beating Sandy Casar, who was the brightest prospect in the local area. His biggest result was winning the Under-23 section of the Grand Prix des Nations, after which Le Télégramme reported that Wegelius was one of the most promising riders of his generation. Kristiina Wegelius
Kristiina Marketta "Tintti" Wegelius (born 12 October 1960) is a Finnish former competitive figure skater. She won medals at Skate Canada International, Skate America, and NHK Trophy, as well as four Finnish national titles. Wegelius placed tenth at the 1980 Winter Olympics, as high as sixth at the World Championships (1981, 1983), and as high as fourth at the European Championships (1979, 1980, 1981). She was coached by Carlo Fassi. After retiring from competition, Wegelius performed with Disney on Ice and became a skating coach and choreographer. Martin Wegelius
Martin Wegelius (10 November 1846 – 22 March 1906) was a Finnish composer and musicologist, primarily remembered as the founder, in 1882, of the Helsinki Music Institute, now known as the Sibelius Academy. Wegelius studied in Leipzig, Vienna and Munich. He had intended to pursue a career as a composer, and wrote handful of orchestral works and a significant number of chamber and vocal works. He was a particular admirer of Wagner but wrote predominantly in the Romantic style. After founding the Institute he had little time for composing, and appears to have concentrated exclusively on teaching. Graduate of Wegelius' Institute include Jean Sibelius and Agnes Tschetschulin. Karl Magnus Wegelius (20 August 1884 – 9 December 1936) was a Finnish multi-sport athlete, who won five Olympic medals and eight Finnish national championships in sport shooting, gymnastics and track and field athletics. Seinäjoki
Seinäjoki (; "Wall River"; la, Wegelia, formerly sv, Östermyra) is a city located in South Ostrobothnia, Finland; east of Vaasa, north of Tampere, west of Jyväskylä and southwest of Oulu. Seinäjoki originated around the Östermyra bruk iron and gunpowder factories founded in 1798. Seinäjoki became a municipality in 1868, market town in 1931 and town in 1960. In 2005, the municipality of Peräseinäjoki was merged into Seinäjoki, and in the beginning of 2009, the neighbouring municipalities of Nurmo and Ylistaro were consolidated with Seinäjoki. Seinäjoki is one of the fastest growing regional centers in Finland. The city hall, city library, Lakeuden Risti Church and other public buildings were designed by Alvar Aalto.
