2023 Asia Heat Wave
Starting in April 2023, a record-breaking heat wave has affected many Asian countries, including India, Bangladesh, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. Several regional temperature records have been set. The heat wave has caused many deaths due to heat stroke and has prompted health warnings and power outages across multiple countries. A May study by the World Weather Attribution found that the heat wave was made at least 30 times more likely by climate change in India and Bangladesh, and that climate change raised temperatures by at least 2°C (3.6°F) in many parts of Asia in April. Mohe () is a county-level city in Daxing'anling Prefecture, Heilongjiang province. It is the northernmost city in China. Hurricane Otis
Hurricane Otis was a compact but very powerful tropical cyclone which made a devastating landfall in October 2023 near Acapulco as a Category 5 hurricane. Otis was the first Pacific hurricane to make landfall at Category 5 intensity and surpassed Hurricane Patricia as the strongest landfalling Pacific hurricane on record. The fifteenth tropical storm, tenth hurricane, eighth major hurricane, and second Category 5 hurricane of the 2023 Pacific hurricane season, Otis originated from a disturbance several hundred miles south of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Initially forecast to stay offshore and to only be a weak tropical storm at peak intensity, Otis instead underwent explosive intensification to reach peak winds of and made landfall at peak intensity. 2023 Pakistan Floods
From March to July of 2023, floods caused by monsoon rains returned to Pakistan after nine months. They worsened at the end of June due to upcoming monsoon rains. At least 159 people were killed, including many children. Background Many major floods have occurred in Pakistan. Flooding in 2020 killed 410 people and caused US$1.5 billion worth of damage, with 187 deaths occurring in Karachi in 2021 and 1,739 killed across the country in 2022. 2023 São Paulo Floods And Landslides
During the 2023 Brazilian Carnival holiday weekend, record-breaking rainfall—reaching in 24 hours—caused deadly floods and landslides across the state of São Paulo. At least 65 people were killed, of which 64 were in São Sebastião. Background The affected regions of São Paulo are located in coastal communities surrounded by mountains. On 18–19 February 2023, an area of low pressure off the coast of Brazil brought moist onshore flow, leading to significant rainfall in the region. 2022–2023 Philippine Floods
In December 2022, a series of floods began to severely affect the provinces of Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental, and some parts of the southern island of Mindanao in the Philippines. The floods were caused by intense rain, which poured down on the central and southern parts of the country. Cause The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a statement that the widespread rains were triggered by the shear line collision located within the regions of Visayas and Mindanao. 2023 North India Floods
Heavy rainfall during the 2023 monsoon season resulted in severe flooding and landslides across Northern India, primarily affecting residents in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi.
