Volleyball is one of the most oldest team sports practiced in Russia. The Russian Volleyball Federation is the Official governing body for this sport After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Volleyball Federation stripped Russia of hosting the men's World Cup in August 2022. History Development of volleyball in Russia Volleyball began to develop widely in Russia in 1920–1921 in the Middle Volga ( Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod). Then it appeared in the Far East in Khabarovsk and Vladivostok, and in 1925 in Ukraine. At that time volleyball was jokingly referred to as "the actors game" in Ukraine. Soviet Union Women's National Volleyball Team
The Soviet Union women's national volleyball team was the national volleyball team that had represented the Soviet Union in the International competitions between 1952 until 1991. Fédération Internationale de Volleyball, FIVB considers Russia as the inheritor of the records of Soviet Union (1952–1991) and Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS (1992). The USSR Volleyball Federation joined the FIVB in 1948, a year after the foundation of the international governing body. Volleyball has been part of the Summer Olympics program for both men and women consistently since 1964. Brazil, the United States and the former Soviet Union are the only teams to win multiple gold medals at the men's tournament since its introduction. Men's European Volleyball Championship
The Men's European Volleyball Championship (''EuroVolley'') is the official competition for senior men's national volleyball teams of Europe, organized by the European Volleyball Confederation ( CEV). The initial gap between championships was variable, but since 1975 they have been awarded every two years. The current champion is Italy, which won its seventh title at the 2021 tournament. History The first tournament was held in 1948 with participation of six national teams. Being only participant from Eastern Europe, Czechoslovakia captured gold. The teams from Eastern Europe dominated at the tournament for next four decades. Soviet Men's Volleyball Championship
The history of the USSR championships began on April 4, 1933. On that day the first matches among the national teams of the five cities were held at the Palace of Metalworkers in Dnepropetrovsk. These competitions, as well as the next three similar championships, were officially called the All-Union Volleyball Holidays. The USSR championships among club teams representing various voluntary sports societies and departments were held since 1938. In 1956, 1959, 1963 and 1967 the USSR champion title was played in the Summer Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR. In 1937, 1941-1944 and 1964 there were no USSR Championship competitions. Volleyball
Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other team's court under organized rules. It has been a part of the official program of the Summer Olympic Games since Tokyo 1964. Beach volleyball was introduced to the programme at the Atlanta 1996. The adapted version of volleyball at the Summer Paralympic Games is sitting volleyball.
