Vaura
Vaura is an American experimental band from Brooklyn, New York, United States, formed in 2009 by singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Joshua Strachan and featuring Kevin Hufnagel ( Dysrhythmia, Gorguts) on lead guitar, Toby Driver (Kayo Dot, Maudlin of the Well, Secret Chiefs 3) on bass. Vaura's debut album, ''Selenelion'', was released on Wierd Records in February 2011. Stereogum described the record as "a warped, heady strain of metal, one that incorporates bits and pieces of black metal, post-rock, and prog, melting them all into one singular brooding sludge". The band has toured in support of French group Alcest and has played with Bloody Panda, Sannhet, Deafheaven, Monarch and Castevet. In early 2013, Vaura was signed to Profound Lore Records. Their sophomore effort, ''The Missing'', was released by the label on November 12, 2013 followed by a third LP in 2019 entitled ''Sables'' which was mixed by longtime Scott Walker collaborator Peter Walsh. Toby Driver
Toby Driver is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, songwriter, producer, label owner, and artist, best known for his work as the leader of the experimental bands Kayo Dot and maudlin of the Well. Driver creates the majority of the album artwork associated with these bands, performs the lead vocals and several instruments, produces the albums, and has written and arranged the music for both bands. Although several members of motW continued on when the band dissolved and reformed as Kayo Dot in 2003, Driver is the only remaining member of the original line-up of maudlin of the Well who is still consistently active with Kayo Dot. Joshua Strachan
Joshua Strawn (born 1976), known professionally as Joshua Strachan, is a songwriter, record producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Biography Joshua Strachan was born in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa, grew up and currently resides in Roanoke, Virginia. In Roanoke, Strachan met Jeremy Kolosine of the seminal electropunk band Futurisk, who was then playing in a dream pop/shoegaze band called Shakespace. Kolosine invited Strachan to join the band, first as a keyboardist, then later as a vocalist and guitarist. Simultaneously, Strachan took up playing bass in the Diplomats. Shakespace recorded one EP and one album, while the Diplomats recorded an EP which was mixed by R.E.M. veteran Mitch Easter. The Diplomats disbanded before the EP was released, and Shakespace disbanded during the recording and mixing of their last album. The Flenser (also known as Flenser Records) is a San Francisco-based record label specializing in experimental music. Kayo Dot
Kayo Dot is an American avant-garde metal group. Formed in 2003 by Toby Driver after the break-up of ''maudlin of the Well'', they released their debut album ''Choirs of the Eye'' on John Zorn's Tzadik Records that same year. Since then, Kayo Dot's lineup has drastically changed over the years. Toby Driver is the only founding member of the band still remaining, save for frequent lyrical contributions from former motW member Jason Byron. Up until 2011, the lineup was constantly shifting, and Kayo Dot's sound consistently changed over the years, featuring a wide variety of instrumentation including guitar, drums, bass, violin, saxophone, vibraphone, synthesizers, clarinets and flutes. Sannhet (Norwegian for "truth") is an American experimental metal band from Brooklyn, New York, United States. The band formed in 2010 by John Refano, Christopher Todd, and AJ Annunziata. They have released three full-length albums as well as a variety of EPs and singles which were collected together and released in their 2016 compilation album ''Young Death''. Sannhet has become known for their elaborate live shows which combine their "dense" sound with lights, projected visualizations and rhythm-synced strobes. Deafheaven is an American post-metal band formed in 2010. Originally based in San Francisco, the group began as a two-piece with singer George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, who recorded and self-released a demo album together. Following its release, Deafheaven recruited three new members and began to tour. Before the end of 2010, the band signed to Deathwish Inc. and later released their debut album ''Roads to Judah,'' in April 2011. They established a unique style blending black metal, shoegazing, and post-rock, among other influences, later called "blackgaze" by reviewers. Castevet was an American black metal band formed in 2006 in New York City, New York. The band announced their breakup on July 21, 2014. The last line-up of the band featured Andrew Hock on vocals and guitar, Ian Jacyszyn on drums and Krallice member Nicolas McMaster on bass guitar. Alcest
Alcest is a French post-black metal band from Bagnols-sur-Cèze, founded and led by Neige (Stéphane Paut). It began in 2000 as a black metal solo project by Neige, soon a trio, but following the release of their first demo in 2001, band members Aegnor and Argoth left the band, leaving Neige as the sole member. In 2009 drummer Winterhalter from Les Discrets joined Alcest's line-up, after eight years with Neige as the sole full-time member. Since its creation, Alcest has released six studio albums and a number of EPs and split releases. Peter Walsh (born 1960) is a British record producer and engineer. Walsh began his career as an engineer at London's Utopia Studios in the late 1970s, working with Stevie Wonder, The Tubes, Spandau Ballet and The Boomtown Rats amongst others. His breakthrough was as assistant producer on the 1981 debut album by Heaven 17, ''Penthouse and Pavement''. Following this success he went on to produce several artists among them Peter Gabriel, China Crisis, Gene Loves Jezebel and Simple Minds. In 1984, Walsh produced Scott Walker's album, '' Climate of Hunter''.
