Volodymyr Luciv
Volodymyr Havrylovych Luciv (Ukrainian: Володимир Луців) was a Ukrainian bandurist and tenor. He was born 5 June, 1929 in Nadvirna, eastern Poland, now present-day Ukraine. He learned to play the bandura from Hryhory Nazarenko in the Leontovych Bandurist Capella in Goslar, Germany. A banduryst ( uk, бандури́ст) is a person who plays the Ukrainian plucked string instrument known as the bandura. Rostyslav Hluvko ( uk, Ростислав Олександрович Глувко; 8 May 1927 – 4 March 1990) was a Ukrainian artist, graphic artist, and public figure. A friend of Volodymyr Lutsiv. Biography Rostyslav Hluvko was born on 8 May 1927 in Surazh, now the Shumsk urban hromada of the Kremenets Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. He lived in Kremenets until 1940. In 1940, he was deported to Kazakhstan with his mother. Later, in 1942, he traveled with Polish troops to Palestine via Iran. In 1947 he emigrated to the United Kingdom. Duma (epic)
A Duma ( uk , дума, plural ''dumy'') is a sung epic poem which originated in Ukraine during the Hetmanate Era in the Sixteenth century (possibly based on earlier Kyivan epic forms). Historically, dumy were performed by itinerant Cossack bards called kobzari, who accompanied themselves on a kobza or a torban, but after the abolition of Hetmanate by the Empress Catherine of Russia the epic singing became the domain of blind itinerant musicians who retained the kobzar appellation and accompanied their singing by playing a bandura (rarely a kobza) or a relya/lira (a Ukrainian variety of hurdy-gurdy). Dumas are sung in recitative, in the so-called " duma mode", a variety of the Dorian mode with a raised fourth degree. Dumy were songs built around historical events, many dealing with the military actions in some forms. Embedded in these historical events were religious and moralistic elements.
