Vladimir Popov (mathematician)
Vladimir Leonidovich Popov (russian: Влади́мир Леони́дович Попо́в; born 3 September 1946) is a Russian mathematician working in the invariant theory and the theory of transformation groups. Education and career In 1969 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. In 1972 he received his Candidate of Sciences degree (PhD) with thesis Стабильность действия алгебраических групп и арифметика квазиоднородных многообразий (Stability of the action of algebraic groups and the arithmetic of quasi-homogeneous varieties). The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, and serves the national and international community through its publications, meetings, advocacy and other programs. The society is one of the four parts of the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics and a member of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences. History The AMS was founded in 1888 as the New York Mathematical Society, the brainchild of Thomas Fiske, who was impressed by the London Mathematical Society on a visit to England. John Howard Van Amringe was the first president and Fiske became secretary. A fellow is a concept whose exact meaning depends on context. In learned or professional societies, it refers to a privileged member who is specially elected in recognition of their work and achievements. Within the context of higher educational institutions, a fellow can be a member of a highly ranked group of teachers at a particular college or university or a member of the governing body in some universities (such as the Fellows of Harvard College); it can also be a specially selected postgraduate student who has been appointed to a post (called a fellowship) granting a stipend, research facilities and other privileges for a fixed period (usually one year or more) in order to undertake some advanced study or research, often in return for teaching services. Zinovy Reichstein (born 1961) is a Russian-born American mathematician. He is a professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He studies mainly algebra, algebraic geometry and algebraic groups. He introduced (with Joe P. Buhler) the concept of essential dimension. Early life and education In high school, Reichstein participated in the national mathematics olympiad in Russia and was the third highest scorer in 1977 and second highest scorer in 1978. Because of the Antisemitism in the Soviet Union at the time, Reichstein was not accepted to Moscow University, even though he had passed the special math entrance exams. He attended a semester of college at Russian University of Transport instead. Claudio Procesi (born 31 March 1941 in Rome) is an Italian mathematician, known for works in algebra and representation theory. Career Procesi studied at the Sapienza University of Rome, where he received his degree (Laurea) in 1963. In 1966 he graduated from the University of Chicago advised by Israel Herstein, with a thesis titled "On rings with polynomial identities".
