The Victorian Phoenix Water Polo Club is a Melbourne based Australian water polo club that competed in the Australian National Water Polo League. Established in 2022, the club had a men's team and a women's team. History The Victorian Tigers (formerly known as the Richmond Tigers and the Hawthorn Tigers) were a water polo team competing in the Australian National Water Polo League established in 1990. Their success came mostly in the early years of the National League, which they dominated, winning the first four championships. They won the competition in 2010 with a victory over the Drummoyne Devils, 10–8. They played most of their games at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, with a few games at the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure centre. The club left the league at the conclusion of the 2013 season. Australian National Water Polo League
The Australian Water Polo League is the premier Australian domestic water polo competition. The men's league began in 1990 and the women's league started in 2004. Ten clubs compete in the league, each fielding a women's and a men's team. As of 2021 five clubs are based in Sydney and one each in Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle, Newcastle and Perth. The first history of the sport in Australia was launched in February 2009, under the title 'Water Warriors: Chronicle of Australian Water Polo', by Dr. Tracy Rockwell. The 592-page publication features over 1,300 images and is an in-depth reference on water polo in Australia from its first match in 1879 to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Melbourne Sports Centres - MSAC is an international sporting venue located in Albert Park, Victoria, Australia. The centre was opened on 24 July 1997 at a construction cost of A$65 million. The cost was funded by the State Government of Victoria and the City of Port Phillip. The centre has hosted international events including the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2007 World Aquatics Championships. The centre has several swimming pools and international standard diving facilities. There is a large multi-purpose sports hall used for sports such as badminton, basketball, table tennis and volleyball, and also squash courts and a gym. Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. The University of New South Wales Wests Water Polo Club is an Australian club water polo team that competes in the Australian National Water Polo League, National Water Polo League. There is a men's team based at Ashfield, New South Wales, Ashfield and a women's team based at the University of New South Wales. Their men's team is known as the 'Magpies' and their women's team is known as the 'Killer Whales'. This was as a result of merger between the more women's based UNSW Killer Whales club and the more men's based Wests Magpies club. The merger started in 2009 and was officially completed (as we see it today) in 2013. Water Polo Australia (WPA), formerly Australian Water Polo (AWP), is the national governing body for Water polo in Australia. They are responsible for administration of the national men's, women's, and junior teams, the Australian National Water Polo League, and development of the sport in Australia. WPA broke away from the Amateur Swimming Union of Australia (now Swimming Australia) in 1982 to become the Australian Amateur Water Polo Association (AAWPA).
