Australian National Water Polo League
The Australian Water Polo League is the premier Australian domestic water polo competition. The men's league began in 1990 and the women's league started in 2004. Ten clubs compete in the league, each fielding a women's and a men's team. As of 2021 five clubs are based in Sydney and one each in Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle, Newcastle and Perth. The first history of the sport in Australia was launched in February 2009, under the title 'Water Warriors: Chronicle of Australian Water Polo', by Dr. Tracy Rockwell. The 592-page publication features over 1,300 images and is an in-depth reference on water polo in Australia from its first match in 1879 to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. An updated edition is being planned. UNSW Wests Magpies
The University of New South Wales Wests Water Polo Club is an Australian club water polo team that competes in the Australian National Water Polo League, National Water Polo League. There is a men's team based at Ashfield, New South Wales, Ashfield and a women's team based at the University of New South Wales. Their men's team is known as the 'Magpies' and their women's team is known as the 'Killer Whales'. This was as a result of merger between the more women's based UNSW Killer Whales club and the more men's based Wests Magpies club. The merger started in 2009 and was officially completed (as we see it today) in 2013. The Wests Magpies men's national league team were formally known as the West Sydney Sea Hawks from 1997-2001, before adopting the name 'Magpies'. The club won the women's national league in 2018. History Behind Great Britain, Australia was the second nation in the world to play the game of water polo. The first known Australian match occurred at St Kilda Sea Baths, Melbourne on 3 March 1879 and was demonstrated by Professor Fred Cavill, who had only just emigrated from England.
