Vicente Banet
Vicente Banet was a Cuban tennis player. In the 1920s he featured in seven Davis Cup ties for Cuba, winning four singles rubbers. His wins came against Jack Wright (Canada), Gilbert Nunns (Canada), Ignacio De La Borbolla (Mexico) and Ricardo Tapia (Mexico). He was part of Cuba's first ever Davis Cup team, with the island one of five countries to debut in the 1924 International Lawn Tennis Challenge. Banet won two bronze medals for Cuba at the 1930 Central American and Caribbean Games. Central American And Caribbean Games
The Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC or CACGs) are a multi-sport regional championship event, held quadrennial (once every four years), typically in the middle (even) year between Summer Olympics. The games are for countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the South American Caribbean countries of Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela. The games are overseen by Centro Caribe Sports (''formerly CACSO''). They are designed to provide a step between sub-CACG-region Games held the first year following a Summer Olympics (e.g. Central American Games) and the Continental Championships, the Pan American Games, held the year before the Summer Olympics. The 2nd Central American and Caribbean Games ( es, Juegos Deportivos Centroamericanos) were held in Havana, Cuba from 15 March to 5 April 1930. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition. Jack Wright (tennis)
John Alexander Wright M.D., C.M. (November 11, 1901 – September 21, 1949) was a Canadian tennis player and physician and surgeon. He won the singles title at the Canadian Open in 1927, 1929 and 1931. His tennis game was characterized by a powerful service and groundstrokes. Wright captured the Canadian Open tennis tournament singles title three times, in 1927, 1929, and 1931. He won the doubles title four times with his Davis Cup teammate Willard Crocker in 1923, 1925, and 1929, and once with Marcel Rainville, in 1931. At one point in 1927 he was ranked third in the world, the highest ranking achieved by a Canadian singles player until Milos Raonic in 2016. Wright was also Canada's top ranked tennis player for five years (1926-29 and 1931). Gilbert Nunns
Gilbert Nunns (June 30, 1907 – July 16, 2001) was a Canadian tennis player. Born in Leeds, England, Nunns grew up in Canada and was intramural singles and doubles champion while at the University of Toronto. He won the singles title at the Ontario Championships on multiple occasions and was twice runner-up at the Canadian Championships. His career included Davis Cup appearances in 1927, 1933 and 1934, the latter as playing captain. Ricardo Tapia Acuña (27 September 1909 – 2 April 1996) was a Mexican tennis player. The son of a doctor, Tapia was born in Mexico City and competed on the international tour in the 1920s and 1930s. 1924 International Lawn Tennis Challenge
The 1924 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the 19th edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. The tournament was, for the second straight year, divided into the America and Europe Zones. 17 teams competed in the Europe Zone, and 6 in America. China, Cuba, Hungary, Mexico, and New Zealand all competed for the first time, and South Africa and Austria returned to create the largest field to date. For the second straight year, Australia defeated France in the Inter-Zonal play-off, but once again fell to the United States in the challenge round. The final was played at the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States on 11–13 September.
