Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb ( ar, عمر بن الخطاب, also spelled Omar, ) was the second Rashidun caliph, ruling from August 634 until his assassination in 644. He succeeded Abu Bakr () as the second caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate on 23 August 634. Umar was a senior companion and father-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He was also an expert Muslim jurist known for his pious and just nature, which earned him the epithet ''al-Fārūq'' ("the one who distinguishes (between right and wrong)"). Reynaldo Garrido (born August 4, 1934) was a tennis player from Havana, Cuba. Garrido won the Canadian Open (tennis), Canadian Open in 1959. He played against his brother Orlando H. Garrido in the final of the tournament. Garrido played 5 years for the Cuba Davis Cup team. His best Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam performance was reaching the third round of the 1956 U.S. National Championships (tennis), 1956 U.S. National Championships. Garrido also played jai alai in Cuba and in Miami in the 1960s at the same time that he was the tennis professional at Miami's Jockey Club. Orlando Garrido (tennis)
Orlando H. Garrido (born 1 March 1931) is a Cuban biologist and former tennis player. A native of Havana, Garrido was a University of Miami collegiate player and represented Cuba in the Davis Cup from 1950 to 1959. He featured in the singles main draw at Wimbledon five times and in 1956 made the fourth round in mixed doubles. In 1959 he was beaten by his brother Reynaldo in the singles final of the Canadian championships. Garrido, a renowned naturalist, is credited with the description of over 100 birds, insect taxa and reptiles. Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre (12 January 1852 – 3 January 1931) was a French general who served as Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is best known for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. His political position waned after unsuccessful offensives in 1915, the German attack on Verdun in 1916, and the disappointing results of the Anglo-French offensive on the Somme in 1916. At the end of 1916 he was promoted to Marshal of France, the first such elevation under the Third Republic, and moved to an advisory role, from which he quickly resigned.
