Vernon Odom
Vernon Odom (born September 16, 1948) is a retired local Philadelphia TV journalist. Early life and education Odom is the son of Vernon Odom Sr. and Sadie Harvey Odom. His sister, Maida Cassandra Odom, also a journalist and a professor at Temple University, Philadelphia. Odom received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and political science from Morehouse College and later continued his education at Columbia University. Career He started with WPVI-TV, in Philadelphia on May 17, 1976. 1985 MOVE Bombing
The 1985 MOVE bombing was the destruction of residential homes in the Osage neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, by the Philadelphia Police Department during a standoff and firefight with the radical communal organization MOVE. Two explosive devices were dropped by a police helicopter on a bunker-like cubicle on the roof of the house that was occupied by MOVE, causing a fire which the Philadelphia Fire Department subsequently let burn out of control, destroying 61 previously evacuated neighboring houses over two city blocks, and leaving 250 people homeless. Six adults and five children in the MOVE compound died in the incident, with one adult and one child surviving. A lawsuit in federal court found that the city used excessive force and violated constitutional rights against unreasonable search and seizure.
