Vernal, Mississippi
Vernal is an unincorporated community in Greene County, Mississippi, United States. Vernal was one of the earliest settled areas of Greene County and was named for an early settler from Scotland. It was once home to Vernal Male and Female Academy, the Vernal School, and the Vernal Consolidated Rural School. A post office operated under the name Vernal from 1843 to 1956. The Vernal Presbyterian Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Area codes 601 and 769 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for central and southern Mississippi, excluding the three counties of the Gulf Coast. Area code 601 was one of the original North American area codes assigned in 1947. Until 1997, it served the entire state of Mississippi. Despite the state's relatively stagnant population growth, 601 was close to exhaustion by the mid-1990s due to the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. Vernal Presbyterian Church
Vernal Presbyterian Church is a historic church near Lucedale, Mississippi in the unincorporated community of Vernal. Description and history The church is a one-story, gable fronted rectangular example of Gothic Revival style architecture. The building faces south fronting a road that runs from Vernal River Road to Winborn Chapel Road. An approximately tall tower rises from a foyer in front of the sanctuary. The sanctuary has a steep gable roof covered with shingles. The tower has a belfry with open handrails and a very steeply angled steeple roof. There are two windows with Gothic art glass transoms flanking the entry. The character of the building is further enhanced by the five windows on the east and west elevation with similar transoms. The rear elevation (north) contains an addition for a Sunday school from 1954 and a wing added to that addition of a fellowship hall from 1974.
