Venus Callipyge
The ''Venus Callipyge'', also known as the ''Aphrodite Kallipygos'' ( el, Ἀφροδίτη Καλλίπυγος) or the ''Callipygian Venus'', all literally meaning "Venus (or Aphrodite) of the beautiful buttocks", is an Ancient Roman marble statue, thought to be a copy of an older Greek original. In an example of anasyrma, it depicts a partially draped woman, raising her light peplos to uncover her hips and buttocks, and looking back and down over her shoulder, perhaps to evaluate them. The subject is conventionally identified as Venus (Aphrodite), though it may equally be a portrait of a mortal woman. The marble statue extant today dates to the late 1st century BC.Havelock, p. 100. The House of Farnese family (, also , ) was an influential family in Renaissance Italy. The titles of Duke of Parma and Piacenza and Duke of Castro were held by various members of the family. François Barois
François Barois (1656–1726) was a French sculptor. Barois was born and died in Paris. While residing at the French Academy in Rome he produced a copy of the Kallipygian Venus for King Louis XIV of France, working on it from 1683 to 1686. Jean-Jacques Clérion
Jean-Jacques Clérion (16 April 1637 – 28 April 1714) was a French sculptor who worked mainly for King Louis XIV. Clérion was born in either Aix-en-Provence or Trets. For much of his career he worked on the Chateau de Versailles, including many of the famous garden sculptures, such as the "Apollo Fountain". His admission piece to the Académie française, a 1689 bas relief of Saint James the Less, may be seen in the Louvre. He also produced a copy of the Kallipygian Venus for Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles in 1686, and a copy of the Medici Venus which may be seen at the Château de Menars.
